The Chinese put ft pinch of ten Into
ii cup filled with boiling water, and
then inverted n saucer over the re-
ceptacle, within whose rim it closely
fittc*d. The object was partly to retain
file heat, but chiefly to prevent the
escnjK* of the fragrance of the herb,
which Chinese olfuetorles found most
delicious. The Infusion was permitted
to stand for live minutes, when it was
decanted Into it second cup without a
saucer and daintily sipped therefrom.
John Hull, however, emphatically :
declined to take his tea In Chinese
fashion. He liked the appearance of
the ornnmentnl ware upon his table,
hut he Insisted on placing the cup In
the unucer, like a miniature flower
|*ot, and used exclusively to drink
from, preparing the beverage in a
common Instead of on individual re-
ceptucle.
In course of time Knglnnd began the
munufucture of cups uud saucers, and
pictures which have been preserved
from the days of the Stuarts show
big, flaring cups, four I hes across
the top, with saucers less than three
Inches In diameter. By degrees one
dwindled and the other expanded, un-
til In the middle of the nineteenth cen-
tury the opposite extreme was reached

Find Sagebrush Hat Value.
The sagebrush of the western prai-
rie lands, heretofore regarded as ut-
terly useless. Is now to be extensively
availed of In the manufacture of pot-
ash. Experiments have been conduct-
ed covering a long periml of time with
specimens of the sagebrush from dif-
ferent parts of the country, and it has
been demonstrated that the ashes of
the plant contain from 15 to 30 per
cent potash, which will make the han-
dling of the sagebrush quite profitable.
The leader In this movement is State
Senator Lee of Nevada, who has s«*v eral
central plants In different parts of the
country engaged In the gathering and
burning of the sagebrush. The ashes
lire shipped to Richmond, Yu., where
they ar«* refined and paid f<>r accord-
ing to the value of the potash cou-
teut.
