Lyching at Pond Creek.
Bill Camphell, a negro, was!
lynched by an angry mob of 500
people nt Pond Creek last Satur-
day night. Ho had been in a
drunken fight with n limn named
Fisher and pulled two guns on
him. when Deputy Sheriff George
Smith ran up to arrest hint. Camp-
bell fired both guns at Smith, one
shot hitting him in the right tem-
ple. Campbell Iiackod away from
the crowd, holding the men id bay
with the guns. Banker McClellan
gratified the negro and the mob
took him in charge. He was
hanged to a|telegrapli pole. He sang
“I’m going home to glory” as the
rope was being tightened about
his neck. Smith, thedeputy sher-
iff, died almost immediately after
he was shot. The lynchers were
so numerous that it isdoubtful if
tlie authorities will take any steps
to punish them.
