I rival of many belated delegates
resulted in an increased attend-
ance at the second day’s sessions
of the big negro congress which
opened yesterday. The visitors
were up with the lark this morn-
ing and at the early hour of fi a.
ni , they filled the auditoriums of
several churches, schools and col-
leges, where prayer services were
held. Before it o’clock the audi-
torium at Piedmont park was
tilled and everything was in rcndi-
I ness for the general sessions.

Insane Model Seeks to
Escape.
Buffalo, Aug. 7.—Miss Helen
Vanderbilt Wackerman, who is
said by many artists to be the
nost beautiful woman in the
vorld, is suffering from severe
injuries she received while smash-
ing the windows of her room to
escape from an imagined danger
Miss Wackerman accompanied
|,y her mother returned fion
Europe some months ago and has
spout most of her time in seclus-
ion at her mother’s home in this
city. A fire in a building across
the street from the Wackerman
residence caused unusual excite-
ment which rendered the young
woman frantic and she attempted
to escape from her room by
breaking six large panes of glass
with her hands. W lien aid
reached Miss Wackerman she was
round to be badly cut and covered
with blood. Though still suffer-
ing from the shock she lias in a
] ncasure recovered from her phy-
I -ical injuries, though she shows
no mental improvement.

is jubilant over securing the
Southern Pacific transcontinental
business in place of New Orleans,
and it is preparing to display its
feelings in a rousing fashion to-

New York Galveston service
