LOUISVILLE KY. May 31. The
'Sons of Confederate Veterans this af
ternoon refused t lay on the table a
motion offered by W. H. McLaws di-
vision commander of -Georgia that
only a Confederate flag be carried In
the Sons of Veterans division of the
confederate reunion parade tomorrow.
Mr. McLaws said he understood a
United States flag was to be carried at
the head pf the Sons of Veterans.
A number of delegates made speches
and It became apparent that an unex-
pected issue had come before the con-
vention. Several of the delegates urged
that the Sons of Veteran carry both
the United States and he confederate
flage in the parade. The part played
by the south in the Spanish-American
war and President McKinley's recent
action In wearing a confederate but-
ton has suggested taht the Unite 1
States government treat the confeder-
ate just as it treats the union soldier
were urged as reasons why the Unite!
States flag be carried by the Sons of
Veterans. After a number of speche3
had been hard ther were rejoinders.
The discussion was growing wider anit
more Interesting when It was cut off
by the motion to table Mr. Law's mo-
tion. All the speakers said that no veter-
an's son was today disloyal to the Uni-
ted States flag but they regarded the
confederate flag as an emblem of their
organization and thought that' it
should lead the parade for that reason.
As the dlscusion had prolonged con-
siderably the session of the convention
an adjournment was taken after the
tabling of McLaw's motion until to-
morrow when the question is expect-
ed to come up for final action.
