London Feb. 17. A dispatch dated
at Jacobsdal yesterday Bays a Boer
command fell on the British rear
guard ntWatorvaal Drift and captured
a largo convoy aftor severe fighting.
The capture of the convoy la a serious
loss to Gen. French and Indicates that
the Boers are moving botwoon his po-
sition and that of Gen. Roborte. Tho
same telegram says Gen. Crsnjo with
10000 men 1b retreating towards
lUootnfonteln presumably to protect
the Free State capital.

cables from Jacobsdal today as fol-
lows: "Kelly-Kenny yesterday cap
tured seventy-eight wagons of stores
two wagons of Mausers' eight boxes
of shells ten barrels of explosives be-
sides a largo quantity of general sup-
plies belonging to General Cronje's
laager which was being shelled when
General Kitchener dispatched tho
messenger.
"London Fob. 17. If the evacuation
of Renaberg by tho British was a part
of the plan to advanco Roberts toward
Bloomfontein it was a costly sacrifice.
Tho British retreat was a rout. The
patrol of the Innisklliing regiment
was surrounded and had to cut itself
out. A company of tho Now South
Wales Lancors was annihilated. Two
companies of the Wiltshire regiment
on outpest duty were cut off and are
probably prisoners. A dispatch says
flu of the British were killed in battle.
Jacobsdal Fob. 17. General Kelly-
Kenny overtook Cronje's rear guard
this morning. A battle Is impending.
The Boers had to stop to save their
transport.

mittee is for the Democratic legisla
tors to return to Frankfort and at
onco affirm In tho regular way the for-
mer action declaring Goebol and Peck-
ham as being elected governor and
lieutenant governor respectively. It
is thought a general compromise will
soon be effected.
