u bitter cold wind was blowing from
the north last evening a tiro broke out
In tho four-story building of the Kng-
llsh Supply A iingine Co. at 410 413
and 411 West Fifth street and burned
for one hour and thirty minutes witli
incredible fury. When the flro had
spent Its force two magnificent brick
buildings were smouldering ruins and
property to the value of S-'I20()0 had
been destroyed. The lire started at
5:80 o'clock. It was under control at 7
o'clock. The tlanics from tho English
Supply Co "s building communicated
with the four-storv brick occupied
by tho (Ireut Western typo foundiy
and the Western Newspaper union and
thirty minutes later the walls of both
buildings begun to fall. The Humes
leaped 100 feet in tho uir and burning
brands were showered over the north
end threatening to destroy that por-
tion of the town. Adjoining buildinvs
were .set lire by burning brands but
were extinguished before any damage
had been done.
The llremen weie quickly on the
scone but could do nothing to save
the burning building and lent their
efforts to keeping the lire from spread-
ing to adjoining property. The water
pressure was the poorest in the history
of the citv in recent years. In the
burning buildings the II res burned
briskly and no appreciable effect was
made on them by the water. All of
the companies in the city except two
wore called out to the ilrc.
