The Herald males mention of
these facts to show the press of the
new state what danger it stands in
when it discusses public matters
and puUic men connected with
them. Within a very short period
one newspaper h:is found itself de-
fending three lawsuits for damages
and it lost all three. The newspa
per bad no other motive in the
world but the common good of the
people; we will venture to say that
it held high opinion of every one
of the plaintiffs at the time their
names were used iu the discussion
and that it still holds them in high
esteem for they are reputable citi
zens.
The fact is we need a new libel
law one for newspapers especially
where the news it gathered up
hnrriedly and there is no intention
to do injury to anyone. It is not
special legislation to gi'e a law of
that kind. It is hardly just to have
the same law governing newspapers
that govern individuals. A news
paper makes use of items of news
where it has no malice at all in
publishing the events incident yet
the newspaper is accountble the
same as the individual involved
and the former may be proceeded
against and the latter go scot free

The newspapers of the new state
are not aware of the dangers they

It is well that three cises from

MODEST CLAIMS OFTLN CARRY THE
MOST CONVICTION.
When Maxim the famous gun
inventor placed his gun before a
committee of judges he stated its
carrying power to be tvach below
what he felt sure the gun would
accomplish. The result of the trial
was therefore a surprise instead of
disappointment. It is the same
with the manufacturers of Cham-
berlain's Colic Cholera and Diar-

licly boast of all this remedy will
accomplish but perfer to let the
users make tLe statements. What
they uo claim is that it will poisti-
