PERSIAN SHAH'S NEW MASCOT.
Boy Takes Place of Eiack Cat Luck-
Erinjtr to Monarch.
Thli curious title has quite as curt
ous a story for it concerns the "ma
cot" of the late shah of Persia.
Nasr-ed-din wa an intensely u-
perstllious man and believed that hi
luck lay in his beautiful black Persian
:at which was a remarkably band-
loir.e cat in a land where cats are
nearly ail handsome. The shah nevei
allowed the black eat to be away from
bim and it was given In charge of one
9f his wives Amln Agdas who wai
ityled "The Wife of the Cat"
When the eh ah went on bis long
hooting expeditions the Persian cal
was put Into a decorated backet and
carried by a special attendant directly
behind his master. Unluckily one day
an accident occurred and .the Hack cat
same to an untimely end. The ahah
was in despair at the loss of his luck
bringer but the clever "Wife ot the
Cat" exerted her Influence and brought
oer nephew under the shan's notice
ays Hunt Notes. The lad waa share
enough to make the most of an acci-
Jent (planned by his aunt) and safe
the shah't life and the monarch iu
so pleased that be gave the boy tht
same of "The Cherished 0 the Sot
reign" and installed Ue new luck-
bringer. Everydiy Heroism.
Walt Whitman the poet had a
lain true word to aay which ever)
tort of man including those who deny
o him the appellation "poet" may ac-
cept: "There is no trade or employ
eetit but the young man following It
eay become a hero." A great many
people have the notion that romance Ii
thing of the dim and distant past
with which present-day people have ns
lort of concern; that the tragic and
the wonderful the heroic the glorious
the beautiful In life are to be sought
ind found only in some distant era;
that exalted virtue and greatness ol
loul are things to read about and that
ie opportunity to display and emu-
late the highly prized qualities that
tnnoble and lift up men and women
nly comes to certain favored people
in romantic ages remote from tht
