CHICKASHA IXD. TICK. JULY 10. 1905
JUST sTATKHOOD
It is to hi a single statehood convention- tint's
all. Folks with axes to grind and 'special uiteres's
to promote haa better slay at home
The purpose of the convention is to give a clear
cut expression of the wishes of the people cf the
two territories for the enlightenment of the powers
that be. There mist be no divide! opinion.
It's time for people with pet notions to let up and get
into the single statehoo 1 band wagon with both feet.
Endorse the Hamilton bill? Now who ever
scared up such a crazy notion? Everybody knows it
Was nothing but the omnibus feature of this bill that
prevented us from getting statehood at the last session
nothing but that the fact that Arizona and New
Mexico were hanging ou our skirts. It would be the
height of folly to endorse such a ineasiii'e'.
No congressman has ever denied tint Oklahoma
and Indian Territory are prepared for statehood. It
bes been seriously questioned that Arizona and New
Mexico are so qualified. It should be the aim of the
statehood workers to marshall facts to prove that
Oklahoma and Indian territory should stand on their
merits that it is an injustice to yoke them up with
two territories that do not compare with them in their
qualifications for statehood. The evidence should
be heaped up so strongly that Congress cannot evade
its duty
The statehood convention should deel ire in un-
mistakable terms for a divorcement from the. entangl-
ing alliances that stand in our way. Let us show
the nation that we know our rights and dare maintain
them. The truculent attitude never won anything.
Let us stand up boldly in defense of our cause.
Every effort should be made to keep all extrane-
ous issues out of the convention. We want state-
hood want it bad and should put aside all private
interests and petty person il ideas in order to get it.
Evkr sinck the Ilobart banker Dunlap gave
Outer Benedict an auto the newspaper men all over
the territory have been holding up Duulap's act as a
bright and shining example but no more autos have
fallen from the tree so tar. Even the mighty press
seems powerless to convert' the auto-gift act into a
craze.
The colored gentlemen didn't get in on the
delegation too many Texans there.
Elihu Root was given a big send-off by the
President for giving up his lucrative law practice in
order to become Secretary of State at a paltry sal-
ary. It is pretty certain that something more than
the spirit of self-sacrifice and th desire to si rve his
country in this position moved Elihu. Mr.
R ot is ambitious and he sees the presidency looming
up before him
'
PrksiuKNT RousKVhLT gave the teachers a
rrtat jolly in his speech at Asbury Park. After
Ulling them what a great thing it was to work for
humanity regardless of the attractions A filthy
lucre the President was careful to add "I have alwajs
be'-'ii in favor of belter salaries for teachers."
A commercial club banquet? Certainly let's get
together eat and smoke get closer together talk
Chickasha and work up town-pride and enthusiasm.
Ha'-e the banquet and make it a hummer. Might
invite Tom Lav. son to c une and make a speech if
Deacon Jones declines to speak.

.
Rko. Kkotts editor "pro tern" ot the Expre: s
hs been relieved from duty with many thanks for
his services. His good work showed that his right
hand and pen have not lost their cunning.
Everyone who can possibly leave his business
should join the procession to Oklahoma City Wednes-
day. Let the two territories find cut that Cbickasha
occupies a big n'ace on the map.
Ie Tins cold weather continues Chieka-dia will
soou number among among its many attractions thoe
of a summer resort "Cool Chickasha" may rival
"cool Colorado.

The Chickasha band carried off honors at the
last statehood convention and it will do the same
thing this time.
Chas. Hunter made a model presiding officer.
He kept the meeting moving and injected life-uito
every movement.
-.
The committee should not fail to get Deacon
Jones a megaphone to take to the statehood conven-
tion. ; .
While you are rooming for statehood at Oklaho-
ma City put in some good strong roots for Chickaska.
Alfalfa and pigs appear to be the most pro
filable products of Indian Territory farms.
That everyone is interested in statehood was
quite evident in ihe meeting Saturday.
'
Charley Hunter can beat a Methodist presid-
ing elder taking up a collection.
Go To the commercial club meeting tonight and
be among the town pushe.-1.
IT will be tbe last statehood convention let us
hope and pray.
Chickasha will be heard from at the statehood
convention.

We don't claim to cure everything but we do claim that un-
