4 THE INDIAN ADVOCATE
sold this for a trifling sum before he turned his back on
civilization.
After a sixteen year sojourn with white men the old
Sauganash found rough Indian life less to his taste than he
had hoped. Yet he stayed with his tribesmen at Council
Bluffs until his death on September 28 1841.
Billy Caldwell the Sauganash had a less melodramatic
career than did many other famous Indians. Yet he did
more than most of them to help along the cause of progress
and civilization in the Far West. To him in great measure
was due the usually peaceful relations between settlers and
savages in the semilawless section where he was so feared
and honored.

We are fully convinced that the assurances of faith cannot
deceive us and yet we cannot bring ourselves to them and
are more ready to listen to human reasons and to place confi-
dence in the deceitful things of this world. Now how comes
this? The effect of it is very sad; it prevents us from advan-
cing in virtue and it makes us indifferent to the glory of God.
S. Vinit.nt or Paul.
The glorious fathers S. Anthony and S. Francis reached
a sublime degree of Christian perfection; but how was it?
Was it not because they put unlimited confidence in the
providence of God and because they really took Christ at
his word? Thus when they heard those words of his read
aloud in church "If thou wilt be perfect go and sell all
that thou hast give it to the poor and come follow me"
they took them as addressed to themselves. We know what
was the result; their trust and confidence in Jesus Christ
did not deceive them; they never repented of it but they
made such progress daily in the divine service that when
they came to die God raised them to some of the highest
thrones in heaven.
