THE INDIAN ADVOCATE.
WIDOWED.
'Twas on a Christmas mornin' and I hurrying homo
from Mass
Ho faced me in the frosty path an' wouldn't let me
pass;
In his new frieze and soft caubeen as handsome as
a king
He tascd me till I gave him lave to buy the weddin'
ring.

The time is far away
But the lightest heart in all the world
"Was mine that Christmas day.
We stood on that day twelvemonth forninst dear
Father Mike;
'Twas Lady Fanny baked the cake I never saw the
like.
My uncle Darmody brought down a piper from
Knockawn
(There wasn't one upon the flure could shake a foot
wid Shaun.)

But you stepped it free and light
How shy I was how glad I was
How proud I was that night.
And on the next day t elvemonth he laned above
my bed
"My cup of joy is full Aileen" thim were the
words he "said;
He tuk the baby from my arm and kissed the
downy cheek
('Twas like a crazy man he was for betther than a
week.)

My ayes are blind with tears;
They've not been dry at Christmas time
For more than forty years.
For more than forty years ochone they're lyin'
side by side
The man that never said me nay the lad that was
my pride.
Again 'tis Christmas mornin' and to face the road
I'm loath
For the way lies through the churchyard an' I'll be
to pass them both.
My darlin's 0 my darlin's
There's faintness at my heart;
I'm turnin' five-and-sixty now
We'll not be long apart.

CHRISTMAS.
The Gospel narrative relating the
events of this day (Luke ii. 1-20) com-
ing like a beam of mystic. light from
the interesting past lures the soul away
to be enraptured in the contemplation
of the beautiful long ago so pregnant
with manifestations of God's so god-
like attributes and incomprehensible
condescensions in dealing with man.
The soul animated by faith and borne
on the wings of responsive love guided
by the unbroken thread of tradition
and the imperishable landmarks of his-
tory wings its way to the hallowed
neighborhood of David's ancient city
consecrated to the memory of the di-
vinely planned events it witnessed on
this historic night.
In spirit I stand on the hillside of
Judea illumed by the glory of God
which shines upon it. 1 behold as in
a grand panorama the past history and
future destiny of a race to whi h Adam
had bequeathed only guilt and tribula-
tions but in whose regeneration and
beatification God deigns to become the
principal and all-necessary actor.
While I contemplate the absorbing
vision
Harkl from the mountain stealing
Borne on the midnight gale
"Whispering through the forest
And floating along the vale!
Comes a voice of gladness
Echoing from the glen
Glory to God in the highest
And peace on earth to men !
Who before ever heard such an an-
them ! Divine love breaking forth in
song to which human ears may listen
enraptured ! Device worthy the Om-
nipotence which presses into service the
very elements to bear afar the tidings
of the magnitude of His benignity I
Even the midnight bre'eze kissing the
lonely mountain top sighing with the
shivering forest fanning the thirsty
plain and lisping fairy music in the
secluded glen bears with it from angel
lips the first message from the Son of
God made man to the sons of men
made sinners ! Wonderful aptitude
with which infinite love seeks to com-
municate itself to finite indifference
and to impart to it at least a spark of
responsive ardor!
