A small town Jeweler advertises that
he handles only the best of everything
in his line and that everything bought
from his store represent the acme of
quality.
Purchases from his store are put In
boxes bearing his firm name and it
used to be an every-day occurrence for
people to drop In and ask for a box.
These requests of course came from
paoplewho had bought cheap Jewelry
eluawhere most probably to bo ued
as presents and In order to create
the. Impression that It was of standard
quality sought to associate It with
this Jeweler's reputation for quality
gained through his advertising.
He finally adopted the practice of
supplying free boxes on which his
name did not appear. This put an end
to requests fur boxes and possibly in-
creased his sales
Manufacturers of heavily advertised
brands of merchandise must depend
on repeat sales and continuous patron
age at uhe hands of satif!ed purchas-
ers. As a rule their responsibility and
methods of doing business as well ss
the reputation of their products are
thoroughly Investigated by the pub-

Why Is "advertised merchandise"
bcter than "unadvertised merchan-
dise"? I have been asked this ques-
tion man; times lately states Mr
Holland in Farm and Hunch by mer
chants and others. There are many
reasons why
A manufacturer who spends large
sums of money advertising his particu-
lar brand of products must necessarily
llvri up to the statements made in his
advertising in order to keep his pro-
ducts in a steady demand. You maj
bo Induced to make a trial purchase of
a certain article by reasou of seeing it
continuously advertised but unit's
your purchase fulfills 'promises made
in the advertising you do not repeat
the purchase
No manufacturer can afford to let
his "advertised products" fall below
his "'advertised claim" in which case
dlssatishVd trial-piirchu'ers uou'd not
only fail to repeat but would volunteer
the information among their acquaint
ancea that a certain brand of merchan-
dise had not made good.
A few weeks ago I called on a mer-
chant in n small Texas town to inquire
wimt heavily advertised brands he car-
ried. His reply uas that ho refused
to handle trade-marked-advertise'J
merchandise or any brands well known
to the buying public He further in-
formed me that ho could buy ready-
make clothing from a certain well-
known mitiufncturer several dollars
per suit belon regular price proiided
the manufacturer was not required to
put his name and trade-mark on It.
Of course he could The manufai -turcr
had spent thousands of dollars
advertising that particular brand of
clothes and was therefore compelled
to keep quality up in order to protect
the reputation of his trade-mark back-
ed by his entire advertising expendi-
ture However when he was not re-
quired to brand his clothes this re-
sponsibility ceased and he could cut
quality to meet price. He could work
oil the spoils and ''seconds" of his
factory ; for in every manufactory
there are necessarily some spoiled
goods and faulty products.
Another merchant explained to me
that h did not carry trade-marked-adiertlsed
merchandise fur the reason
that the retail prices of same were
usually controlled and advertised by
the manufacturers whereas on tinad-
verttsed merchandise with which the
trade was not acqtiaiuted he could set
his own price allowing himself a
wider margin of profit.
He camplained particularly about
the profit on a certain article which
retailed at 10 cents and which cost
h'l in laid down in his store "H cents
I made bold to assert that in my est!
nation -i cents profit on a 7-cent
investment (33V per cent) was as
much as he could reasonably expect to
exact from his customers.
