Otto of Roses.
Otto or attar of roses is the frag-
rant. volatile, essential oil extracted
from the petals of roses and Is obtain-
ed by distilling the flowers with water.
Essential oils are so-called on account
of their possessing In a concentrated
form the odor characteristic of the
plant or vegetable substances from
which they are obtained—being as it
were the essence of the plant. Al-
though roses are found growing wild
in nearly every part of the world, It
Is only In France, Turkey nnd India
that they are cultivated for their per-
u.Tie. The Turkish oil -s the one
commonly found in the market. Otto
of roses is the basis of all genuine rose
perfume and Is very expensive.
Pooda for Brain Worker*.
According to n celebrated health ex-
pert. blanched almonds give the high-
er nerve or brain anil muscle food and
the man who wishes to keep his brain
power up would do well to Includo
them in his daily bill of fare. Juicy
fruits give the same In less propor-
tion and are eaten by all men whose
living depends on their clear-headed-
ness. Apples supply the brain with
rest. Prunes afford proof against ner-
vousness, but are not muscle-feeding.
They should be avoided by those who
suffer from the liver. But it has been
proved that fruits do not have tho
some effect upon everybody. Some
men have never been able to eat ap-
ples without suffering the agony of
indigestion; to others strawberries are
like poison.
During the Day and Night.
it nas been seriously asserted by
many people that we are naturally
lighter after a meal, and they have
even gone the length of explaining
this by the amount of gas that Is
developed from the food. Average
observations, however, show that we
lose three pounds six ounces between
night and morning; that we gain one
pound twelve ounces by breakfast;
that we again lose about fourteen
ounces before lunch; that lunch puts
on an average of about one pound;
that we again lose during the after-
noon an average of ten ounces, but
that an ordinary dinner to healthy
persons adds two pounds two ounces
to their weight.

Sunshine.
The latest fad of the very rich is
sunshine, obtained at any cost and
almost at will. Verandas are glassed
in to form sun parlors, and rooms to
which the sun comes in the natural
course of events are furnished accord-
ingly. Then there is no anxiety over
the fading of carpets and hangings.
A room seen recently contained rugs
warranted to resist the influence of
the sun, ecFu curtains and rattac fur-
niture, whe-se cushions were covered
with Java cotton, in bright colors, that
are indelible. It was very pretty and
cheery, and had the sun a good part of
the day in its early hours.
It Singeth Low In Every Heart.
It slngeth low In firry hrnrt,
\Yi- hear it <*«ch and all—
A song of those who answer not,
However wo m.-iv call;
They throng the silence of the brenst,
\Ve see thorn ns of yore—
The kind, the brav. the true, tho sweet
Who walk with us no more.
'TIs hard to take the burden up
When those have laid it down:
They brightened all ihe ,1oy of life.
They softened every frown;
But. oh. 'tis good to think of them
When we are troubled sore!
Thanks tie to God that such have been,
Although they are no more.
More homelike seems the vaHt unknown
Since they have entered there;
To follow them were not so hard.
Wherever they may fare;
They cannot be where God is not,
On am- sea or shore;
Whate'er betides. Thy love abides,
Our God. for evermore.
—John White Chadwick.
Energy Expended in Coughing.
A patient German scientist of a sta-
tistical turn of mind calculates that
tile amount of energy expended by a
person who coughs once every quar-
ter of an hour for ten hours Is equiva-
lent to 250 units of heat or the nour-
ishment yielded by three eggs or two
glasses of milk. Coughing is thus
seen to be an expensive luxury. The
reason for the waste in force entailed
by it, or one reason at least, lies in
the fact that while in normal respira-
tion the air Is expelled from the chest
at thd rate of four feet a second, in
violent coughing it may attain a
velocity of 300 feet.
Urn Buried for 2,000 Years.
In the neighborhood of Bourne-
mouth, England, recently, during the
construction of a new road the exca-
vators cut into a mound, which is in-
dicated upon the map as an ancient
buriel ground, and a large sun-baked
clay urn was unearthed. It was in a
remarkable state of preservation and
was intact. The roots of the heather
had forced their way Into the Interior
of the receptacle and Into the ashes
and dust It contained. The urn was
•slimated to be 2.000 years old.
Keeps Customers in Line.
A Watervile barber has a unique
contrivance in his shop). It is a large
ei.-unciator about two and one-half
feet in diameter and works on the same
principle as the date indicator on the
face of a clock. The numbers run
from one to forty. The idea is that
when a man goes in he takes a card
from a spindle on a stand by the door
and every time a chair is empty the
barber presses the electric button and
tho indicator moves up a number.
When a man's number rings up he
takes his turn.—Lewiston (Me.) Joui'

In icy weather lots of falls seem
to fall to the lot of lots of people.
FOR CONSIDERATION
BY THE THOUGHTFUL.
A Tribute to Weather Conditions
In Western Canada.
During the early portion of Fehru
ary, of this yeur, the middle und
Western States suffered severely with
the intense cold and winter’s storms
Trains were delayed, cattle suffered,
and there was much general hardship
While this was the case, throughout
Western Canada, now attracting so
milch attention, the weather was per-
fect.
One correspondent writes, “We are
enjoying most beautiful weather, the
gentlemen are going to church with-
out top coats, while tlie ladles require
no heavier outer clothing than that
afforded by light jackets. In contrast
with this it Is Interesting to read in a
St Paul paper of 13th February the
following, in double head lines, and
large hold-faced type;
“WARM WAVE NEAR ARCTIC ZONE.”
“CALGARY MUCH WARMER THAN ST. PAUL."
“Balmy Breezes are Blowing in Northwestern Canady
While People are Freezing to Death in Texas
and Other Southern States."
Horses in Battle.
Arabian horses show remarkable
courage in battle. It is said that
when a horse of this breed finds him-
self wounded, and knows instinctively
that he will not be able to carry his
ride.r much longer, he quickly retires,
bearing his master to a place of safe-
ty while he has yet sufficient strength.
But if. on the other hand, the rider is
wounded and fails to the ground, thf
faithful animal remains beside him
unmindful of danger, neighing until
assistance is brought.

During the month of January of this
year the number of settlers who went
to Canada was greater than any pre-
vious January. The movement uorth-
ward is increasing wonderfully.
The vacant lands of Western Can-
ada are rapidly filling with an excel-
lent class of people. The Government
Agents located at different points in
the States, whose duty It is to direct
settlers, are busier than ever. They
have arranged for special excursions
during the months of March and
April, and will he pleased to give in-
