The South and West are uot
looking to the Hast to furnish them

belter off financially than they have
heel) for years. Arkansas Gazette.
In othe words, “General Pros-
ferity/* of whom Colonel Bryan
was wont to make facetious re
marks a short time ago, is hecom
ing tolerably well known to the
voters of the West ami South.
When the leading Bryan organ of
Arkansas concedes that prosperity
hug come, it may be taken as a
tacit confession that all of Bryan's
calamity prophesies in the cam
paigu of *96 were mere bosh to
fool tbe voters. It also may be
taken as an honest hut sly warning
to the voters of Arkansas to pre-
pare for the ravings of windy
calamity howlers of the Bryan
stripe, who will soon bp abroid in

against tbe party of “imperialism

Less than eighteen months ago a
swarm of pot-bellied basso profundo
wind puuchers, mostly popywhat
in politics, with some few spriuk-
liug of republicans, such as Sena-
tor Billy Maton of Illinois, shriek
ed and howled for war. Nothing
but war, bloody grim-visaged war
would satisfy thtir insatiate thirst
for gore.
The president held back.
And then they yelled tbe more,
making tbe United States a perfect
bedlam of npise and din. They
buckled on their tin-swords and
armed themselves with enormous
Fourth of July pistols. They
sweat blood.
The war commenced. The rat-
tlety-bang of musketry was heard
in thu laud, and some of them
ryshed to the front. The ping of
the Mauser bullet was a strange
new noise and these swift messen-
gers of death began to let flow the
life current of American youth.
The real soldiers like Dewey and J
Schley, Roosevelt and Funston,
made Spanish blood run like water.
