London, Feb 19.—A reporter
communicated the news of the dis*
aster t3 the Main to the Spanish Am-
bassador here, Count de Racon,
who was without information on the
subject. After expressing regret at
the terrible occurrence, the Ambass-
ador said that the explosion must
have been due to an unaccountable
accident, as the visit of the Maine to
Havana was of an entirely friendly
nature.

The Main is a battle-ship of the
second class, and is regarded as one
of the best ships in the new navy.
She was built at the Brooklyn navy
yard, end is 3I8 feet long, 7> 1*4
wide, 91.6 mean draugh, end 6682
tons displacement. 8he carries four
lO—inch and six 6-inoh breech-load-
ing guns in her main battery, and
seven 6-pound and eight 1-pounder
rapid-fire guns and four Gatling* in
her secondary battery, and four

The commander of the Maine,
Capt. Sigsbes, is a favorite in the
Navy Department. For four yean
he was chief in the Hydrographic
Ofice, and hia energy brought the
office up to a high standard. He
was lucky to get ao important a ship
as the Maine, considering hia actual
rank, whfeji is that of a Commander*
but immediately he justified the de.
partment’s judgment in the selection
by running his big ship straight into
a dock in New York harbor to avoid
running down a packed excusion boat
This was a cPeplay of quick judgment,
pluck and nerve that pleased the de-
partment so highly that the Captain
was sent a complimentary letter. .
The Main was one of the finest
battle ships afloat; one of the most
perfect in construction, one of the
most complete in equipment. All
that modern invention, long experi-
ence, and trained intelligence could
dc to make her efficient and safe had
been done. And yet this magnificent
vessel, at anchor in the harbor of a
friendly nation, was destroyed with
greater loss of life than would have
followed an engagement with the
whole Spanish fleet in Cuban waters.
Had the Spanish cruisers and tor-
pedo boats attacked the Maine, and
sent her to the bottom with the loss
of 25O lives, the calamity would
have been bard to bear. But to have
the M-tin destroyed as she was des.
troyed is calamity unbearable, it
is useless to cry patience when there
is no patience. It is useless to ask
for suspension of judgement when
judgement has been given. That
judgement is against Spain, and if it
is reversed it will be on the testi
tnony of witnesses who have standing
in the court of publio opi nion.
