Children and Their Pets.
There is nothing more unsafe than to
dogmatize on the subject of children,
unless it is to predict the weather for
the coming week. The most sage and
conscientious parent may have a child
which upsets all known nursery conven-
tions, and the person who is careless in
every daily habit may find himself some
day, posessed of a small Puritan do-
scendant whose every look and act is a
reproach. Nobody can tell. On gen-
eral principles, children are benefitted
by having annimals to play with and
take care of, but it is not one of those
benefits which descend like the sun and
rain, without trouble to anyone. It has
to be worked for.
There is a certain amount of the sav-
age in most children, and the savage is
a natural Ishmaelite. His instinct is to
fight, to be suspicious, and to tyrannize
on the theory that if he does not prove
his strength he will be abused. Those
so-called savage tribes in which differ-
ent principles prevail will usually be
found to have some sort of civilization
to their credit.
The child is necessarily a subject,
obliged to conform to the will of his su-
periors, and to do a thousand things he
does not particularly like, and the ne-
cessity for which he cannot in the na-
ture of things see. Therefore, his im-
pulse is to "take it out" on somebody.
The only somebody at hand, when he
is in a bad humor, may be the cat, and
he consequently takes it out on the ca'.'s
tail. If she be a patient animal she will
submit, without resistance; otherwise
she will give the youngster a lesson
which he will not soon forget. If she
submits he is likely to be carried away
by the love of experiment, and keep on
teasing her until she resents it with
claws, or until his natural guardians in-
tervene and stop the investigation.
A great deal of the cruelty and de- I

structiveness of children is simply cx-
periment. The infant has all the .aws i
them are the laws of animal an \ human
psyco'.opry. He goes about inve^tlgat- j
ing these in much the same way as U..4j
elders do. Few of ui have come by our j J, J
knowledge of human nature with ti" j
somebody's suffering for it dirc.tly or
indirectly. How do we know that men
or women uffer in any given * <n (
unless we ourselves have expeneuec i or
have caused, or seen in one near to us,,
such unhappiness.
The question is, then, haw to tea •!> j

this is not ione. the child's nat ri. ! a~-

One way to teach th" chil 1 i'"* vaiue
of animal life is to give him the prop
ty interest as an influence. If he is
impossible to teach the child to be kind
to his pets, perhaps it is wise that he
do not have any, at least of the kind
that he can easily abuse, or which will
endure a great deal without being act-
ually killed.
If the committee will only locate the

no complaint. It can not be ^South-

Jim Kelly the good looking and well
behaved member of this printing con-
cern quit us cold Tuesday morning and
went over to Hobart to buy that town—-
that is, if it suited him and he could
make arrangements with the govern-
ment officials to take it outin advertising.
Hobart evidently did not look good to
him, for the last we have heard of our
wayward partner he was at Lone Wolf

are in bad shape at this end of the line,
Here Are Some
FACTS
W. M. Mitchell was appointed sur-
veyor to fill the unexpired term of W.
M. Francis deceased. Judge J. W. Ry-
der, of this city, was an applicant for
the position, and though the Judge went
before the commissioners with the larg-
est petition and the strongest creden-
tials he was turned down. The trouble
with the Judge is, he is guilty of the
atrocious crime of living in Granite, and
with that Mangum push it is a part of
the law so plain that it might as well be
written that the best a Granite man ever
gets is the worst of it. We will remem
ber you, boys, when the Ides of Novem-
ber, 1902, roll around.
