THE NEW COUNTRY.
Cheap Homes on Undle
Sam's Domain*
All over the United States, tl»e
people are desiring cheap hornets,
those wishing to better their pres
ent conditions, the tenants living
upon high priced land and paying
high rent, the merchant whose
trade is 1 United and whose mar-
gins are small, all are contemplat-
ing a race into the new country.
They largely watch the news-
papers for reports of the progress
of the government in opening this
.new country, and for the benefit
of all this multitude the Enter-
prise proposes to give them a few
facts.
The country contains about 2,-
560,000 acres. The Indians, man.
woman and child each are entitled
to 160 acres; there are about 3,000
Indians in this country and they
each have the right to.select their
land where they please and the
country cannot be opened to settle-
ment until these Indians have first
selected their lands. They are n
so entitled to about 480,300. acres
of grazing land to be used in com
Mr. Payne,
mon by all the Indians, leaving
an aggregate of about 1,600,000
acres (including school and uni-
versity lands) for the settler.
It is nearly all fine arable land
well watered and adapted to the
raising of corn, wheat, oats, cot-
ton and fruit of al descriptions.
The date for the opening of this
land to settlement has not as yet
been fixed.
The ltock Island ini,road com-
pany has taken the contract to re-
establish the confers and now
have several corps of engineers
in the field. As they establish the
corners and the allotments are
made the Interior department will
proceed to lay off and establish
the county seats of the different
counties, establish the county
lines, appoint the county officers
and fix the rules of the race; after
all this is done the President will
issue his proclamation and they
will be off the greatest free for
None will be barred.
The "race is not always to the
swift" but those who keep them-
selves informed now how to lo-
cate a corner stone, know where
the allotments are and where the
school land is, know the loca-
of the Firm of Cottey & Payne. | all race the world has ever seen.

tion of the principle rivers and
streams will be much better pre-
pared to obtain a claim.
Date of opening. No one can
tell' with any accuracy at this
stage when the country will be op-
ened no one knows not even the
authorities themselves. Some
high in authority think that it will
not be later than August 6th,
others think that it will be much
sooner. The fact that the rail-
roads have taken the matter of
surveying in hand augurs a
speedy and early opening.
The Enterprise will keep you
informed on all thes subjects
The Enterprise map will tell you
how to take a claim, where to take
it, and how to locate a corner
stone and how to tell when you
are on school or public alnd.
Send one dollar to the Enter-
prise Publishing Company, and
we will send you the paper for one
year and the Enterprise map, or
send 25c and we'll send the map.
