He-Insuring risks on vessels long
everdue, and supposed to be lost, Is a
frame of chance in which speculative
marine underwriters have been Indulg-
ing. One of the vessels on which such
mr odds have ben taken was the Brit-
ish bark Commander, which sailed on
April 11, from Chittagong, India, for
the West Indian and the Delaware Break-
water, and has been given up for lost.
Both vessel and cargo were insured
nt ordinary risks, at the rates then cur-
rent for vessels trading on long voy-
ages. After three months had elapsed
without the arrival of the vessel, the
original insurers placed their risks with
other companies, paying 2d guineas
premium, and es aping the payment of
a total loss. Those who took the new
risk became alarmed nt tho continued
absence of the ver.sel, and to protect
tb6nMlT60, they re-Insured the vests!
and cargo at 40 guineas premium. At
the loss of the vessel appears to be
beyond doubt, those a-ho last took the
risk will bo called upon to pay a total
loss.
The British ship Munster sailed, In
ballast, from Hio Janeiro on May 10 for
Newcastle, New South Wales, and is be*
lieved to have been lost off Cape Horn.
She is now being re-Insured nt 80 guin»
eas premium. The ship Lord Spencer,
which sailed from San Francisco for
Queenstown on April , and the Star ol
Austria, which sailed from Santa Ro-
salia on March 25 for Falmouth, are
believed to have been lost, and vessels
and cargoes ar* being re-insured at 70
guineas premium.—Philadelphia Rec-

of this paper, and the reverend gentle-
man said that as long as his editorial
chair had two legs in New York and
two legs in Washington he could never
be considered as having severed all his
connections with the metropolis. "The
Christian Herald," lie said, "with its
wide circulation, Is a tremendous power
for good." and as long as the Lord gave
him health and strength he would write
for that paper—in fact, be would be in

more frequently now than ever. Con-
tinuing. the genial preacher said:
"There is 110 paper in America that
wields a more potential influence lor

Hereafter let no home in America be
without a library.
1 asked l)r. Talmage whether lie could
recommend the library to people who
contemplated securing it, and he said
unhesitatingly, "I know every book.
They were carefully and thoughtfully
prepared, either specially written or
compiled by most eminent literary men,
and there is not a weakling among
them."

John Bull has at length come to the
realization that there are such things
as electric roads in the world, and that
possibly they may be n good thing. An
American syndicate has secured tn»»
franchise for an electric road in the
city of Coventry, which has about 60,-
000 population, and the work Is going
ahead.
An experimental road of * x miles -
was put down in the suburbs of tho l.eatl
city of Leeds, and the city fathers of euiplo\
varolii cities and towns have been French
"Junketed'' over to Leeds and Intro- (
duced to the mysteries of the American
trolley system. The Coveutry authori-
ties were the lirst to yield to Its seduc-
tions.
Tlie method of building street rail-
ways in Kngland greatly lessens tlie
cost of Installation to the promoting
capitalist. The city puts down and
owns the tracks or permanent way.
The operating company leases the
track for twenty-one years, and at tho
expiration of the l$a<e it may be re-
newed. or the city may buy the plant
and rolling stoc k at an appraised valu-
ation.
Tbs Coventry ro.-.d has eight miles of
track, which is nil single trail., but

of rolling stock, poles, wires and power
station Is |Jjo,000. Kverything Is to !>«

poles for the wires It was originally
supposed that English poles would do.
but when put tip they were found un-
equal to the strain of supporting the
mires, and the necessary polos had to
be ordered from Philadelphia.
Tf the innovation takes with the
English public there will be a put of
money for th« American svndicate,
which will probably he called upon to
put in similar roads In nearly all tho
English cities The conservatism of
the English people on this subject
seems to be as pronounced today as it
was in the time when Citizen George
Francis Train put down his first tram-
way In Parliament street. London, and
who then compelled to take up his rail*
by the outraged and indignant public.
The continental cities have taken Washington, the other d

Bubbles or Medals.
" Pest sarsaparillas." When you think of it how contradictory
that term is. For there can be only one best in anything—one best
sarsaparilla, as there is one highest mountain, one longest river, one
deepest ocean. And that best sarsaparilla is ? .... There's
the rub I You can measure mountain height and ocean depth, but
how lest sarsaparilla ? You could, if you were chemists. But then,
do you need to test it? The World's Fair Committee tested it,—and
thoroughly. They went behind the label on the bottle. • What did
this sarsaparilla test result in? Every make of sarsaparilla shut out
of the Fair, except Ayer's. So it was that Ayer's was the only
sarsaparilla admitted to the World's Fair. The committee found it
the best. They had no room for anything that was not the best.
And as the best, Ayer's Sarsaparilla received the medal and awards
due its merits. Remember the word " best " is a bubble tiny breath
can blow; but there arc pins to prick such bubbles. Those others
are blowing more "best sarsaparilla " bubbles since the World s Fair
pricked the old ones. True, but Ayer's Sarsaparilla has tlie medal.
The pin that scratches the medal proves it gold. The pin that
pricks the bubble proves it wind. We point to medals, not bub-
bles, when we say : The best sarsaparilla is Ayer's.
