While I am thankful for and
proud of the vote cast for me I
am a thosands times more thank-
ful for and proud of men who
cast them and the Democracy of
McCurtain County In my an-
nouncment I stated that I would
resort to none of the tactics of
the peanut politican fo win the
nomination and if it did not
come to me a second time by the
free untramledunpurcased and
unpurchasable ballots of the
honest decent self-respecting
sovereigns of the county I would
spurn it as I would the leprosy
and trample under my feet with
i heel of iron In these days of
orrupt poltics and as the opposi-
tion unlolded itself I myself be-
gan to seriously doubt that 1
could win on such a platform
However I had cast the die and
had determined to put the people
of McCurtain County to the test
and I am proud to say that - they
have come up to the full measure
of honest sovereigns in my case
and my confidence in their polife
ical integrity remains unshaken
I entered into no secret caucus
or combination asked no one to
vote for me or work for me at
the polls and met personally but
a few voters What I said and
did was an open book to be read
by men Therefore every bal-
lot cast for me was a free-will of-
fering of the sovereign voter of
which any man ought to be proud
Many did n®t clearly understand
the question The issue was
sharply drawn andvpas precipi-
tated by letters that came from
the S E Normal indicating a dig
posititon on the part of that insti
tution to participate in the selec-
tion of a county Superintendent
’or McCurtain County The
question was whether sham
shoddy aud pretense and scurvy
measly mangy political methods
should dominate the schools of
state or whether political integ-
rity should rule and schools
and superintendents should
stand or fall on their merit and
itness As I had thoroughly
aeqainted them with the issue
he eyes of all the prominent
school men of the state were on
McCurtain county and I re
ceived numerous letters pray-
ing for my success I had given
the people an honest and most
economical administration and
under the circnmstances ard
conditions the best possible For
his reason alone I ought to
lave received the vote of every
ronest Democrat in the county
but this of course with human
nature constitutep as it is was
impossibility Every free-
