Washington September I—Thir-
teen states have voted their ex-
service men cash bonuses in the
aggregate sum of $178500000 and
the payment of these bontnies is
either under way or practically
completed
Legislatures of six other states
have authorized the payment of
cash bonuses to their ex-service
men subject under the law to
a popular referendum The refer-
endum in each case will be held
this year The total amount in-
volved in thee states is approxi-
mately $160000000
Still other states as well as
some of those voting cash bonus-
es have enacted laws providing
for vocational training of ex-service
men in their respective state
institutions or for free scholar-
ships in state normals and colleges
still others provide for free settle-
ment of public lands owned by
the state or sick benefits to dis-
abled ex-service men and death
benefits to their dependents or
exemption from state taxes up to
a fixed amount or loans to ob-
tain education to buy homes farm
machinery and live stock or free
hospitalization etc
Thirteen States Vote $178000000
The thirteen states which have
voted cash bounses and are pay-
ing them and the amount each
state voted are as foilows: Maine
$3000000 Massachusetts $20-
000000 Michigan $30000000
Minnesota $20000000 New Ham-
pshire $1000000 New Jersey
$12000000 New York $15000-
000 Rhode Island $2500000
South Dakota $6000000 Ver-
mont $3000000 Washington $11-

Total $168500000 To this sum
must be added Oregon's contribu-
tion which has just been pro-
vided but payment of which will
not commence for a few weeks
Each man will receive $15 cash
for each month of service or a
loan of $3000 at four per cent
on long time payments It is esti-
mated Oregan will pay not less
than $10000000 All of these
states have Republican legisla-
tures North Dakota voted $25 a mon-
th for each month of service with
the proviso the money should be
expended for Purchase of a home
business farm farm machinery
or medical service
The six state legislatures that
have authorized bond issues to pay
cash bonuses subject to popular
referendum and the amount of the
