‘Two Ton"
Tony Dies
LIVINGSTON, N.J. (UPI) -
“Two-Ton" Tony Galento, who
stunned boxing fans by knock-
ing heavyweight champion Joe
Louis to the canvas in 1939,
died Sunday of a heart attack.
He was 69.
Galento’s right leg was
amputated last Sunday as the
result of a worsening diabetic
condition. His left leg was
removed in a similar operation
last year.
The Orange, N.J. saloon
bouncer packed one of the
hardest punches in the history
of professional boxing.
Regarded as Just another
"easy mark" for Louis, the 5-
foot, 8-inch Galento, who
weighed between 233 and 255
pounds for his fights, had one
great asset — a devastating left
hook.
On June 28, 1939, Galento
tagged Louis squarely on the
jaw in the third round of a title
bout at Yankee Stadium. Louis
went down and 34,852 persons
rose as one to see the
supposedly invincible champion
on the canvas. And over him
was a funny looking fat man,
who predicted before the bout,
“I’ll moider da bum."
It was the highlight of
Galento's career but he paid
dearly for it. Rising from the
canvas, Louis bought some
time in the third round and in
the fourth, rained blow after
blow on Galento. One veteran
boxing writer calculated that
Louis landed 27 consecutive
blows without a return. Finally,
the fat man went down, his
arms clutched around Louis’
legs, and was counted out by
Referee Arthur Donovan.
Galento, who liked to amuse
patrons in his Orange, N. J.,
gin mill by popping the caps off
beer bottles with his thumbs,
became one of boxing’s show-
case individuals after that bout.
He travelled to hundreds of
hospitals, rest homes and Army
camps — always at his own
expense — telling the story of
that single spine-tingling
moment.
Bob Henry,
Howard Morgan
Win At Golf
Bob Henry and Howard Mor-
gan, both of Perry, won honors
and merchandise prizes in the
annual Jim Carlin Pikes Peak
amateur golf tournament play-
ed July 16-21 at Colorado
Springs, Colo., on the Patty
Jewett Municipal course.
Henry finished first in the
seniors championship consola-
tion bracket and Morgan finish-
ed second in seniors consolation
A flight.
Their first two days in Colo-
rado were spent playing qualif-
ying rounds and the last four
were in competition in the 72-
hole meet.
