Flood Program
Coing Forward
Upstream flood prevention
!work on the watershed tributar-
ies of the Washita river are sche-
duled to move ahead at an increa-
sing pace during 1958 according
to State Soil Conservation Board
Executive Director Hemel Burn's
He said $1796952 in federal funds
will be used before July 1 to build
41 upstream dams on 11 tribu-
taries to the Washita
Other upstream projects over
the state will use an estimated
$750000 for building the small
dams during 1958 die said These
include Big and Little Wewoka
creek projects in Pottawatomie
Seminole Okfuskee and Hughes
counties and the Long Branch
project north of Stillwater More
construction money for these—as
well as projects on Big Sandy
west of Ada Bear Fall and Coon
creeks in Oklahoma Logan and
1 Lincoln counties and Little Deep
Fork in Lincoln Creek and Ok-
mulgee counties—is expected to
be furnished by Congress this ses-
Sion Burros said More money
should be available for more con-
struction on the Washita after
July 1 too he said
: The State Soil Conservation
Board in a letter to Gov Ray
4 Viond Gary this week outlined
7 Work accomplished on the up-
' stream projects during 1957 The
I list includes construction of 39 of
the flood prevention dams on tri-
- butaric to the Washita at a cost
of $1515268 These included pro-
: jects on Barnitz Wildhorse Ca-
4 Tzar" Cobb Mill Nine Mile and
Owl Creeks
Other projects in the state
which are built under a different
federal law (Pi 566) received
$467834 in 1957 and 12 flood pre-
vention dams were built Federal
tobstruction money in this cate-
gory is expected to reach the
2750000 figure in 1958 Burros
said
- "All this has cost the State of
Oklahoma only $150000" the di-
- rector said "This was money from
the State Soil Conservation
Board's revolving fund for pur-
'chasing fund as soon as enough 1
dams are built and some of the
land can be sold"
Gov Gary added $50000 to the
State Board's revolving fund from
iris Emergency and Contingency
fund Tuesday so that easements
may be obtained in a few cases
where landowners will not or can
not cooperate by donating ease- I
silents This will allow construe- 1
: tion to be started on projects !
where federal money is waiting to 1
' be used Burros said
'The $30000 amount has actu-
ally already been allocated to up-
stream projects which have fed-
' eral money available arid have re-
quests in for some time" Burma
said For all practical purposes
these is no money left in the fund
at this time "We are deeply
grateful to Gov Gary for getting
'construction started on some of
these projects by granting this
money at a time when it was so
badly needed" he stated
Other conservation work said
the executive director is advan
eing at a rapid pace too Soil
conservation districts are rapidly
signing up new cooperators and
technical SCS personnel in the
district are making conservation
