DOES YOUR POLICY REALLY
PROVIDE INSURANCE FOR YOU?
Are there thousands of citizens of Okla-
homa who only THINK that they are pro-
tected by their sickness accident or time
loss insurance?
Are there thousands Who only TIIINK
that their policy is noncancelable?
Are there thousands who only THINK
that their policy will protect them in case
of a heart condition cancer or other
chronic ailment or infection?
It is easy to suspect that there are many
many such unfortunate people NV110 have
been "booked" by the shyster scheme or
the clever phrase Or the subtle clause
which give an insurance company "the
benefit that lets the policy holder hold the
bag
II may b e noti:ed that Nye pht the WOrdS
"insnrance company" ill quotes This is
because there is some doubt in our minds
whether a cancellable policy is really in-
surance at all
However under the present insurance
code unfortunately the state insurance
commissioner can do nothing about il
despite that fact that his office probably
receives more complaints from this type
of policy than from all of the others com-
bined Ve cannot cover in one issue 111 (16 ihe
methods by which the unsuspecting en') b
separated from his cnsh under the belief
tliat be is buying mune protection for him-
self in case of iliness lecident or time
loss
So let's look only at the time loss policy
and the gimmics connected with it

IUM IS PAID This of course could mean
that the company can't cancel the policy
until the first of the following month if
premiums are paid monthly
This may be an extreme example but
II() company in Oklahoma issues a non-
cancellable time loss policy that can be
called truly non-cancellable for more than
one year There is however a near ex-
(eption in the case Of companies like
North inerican Which write policies un-
der a group plan for organizations such
as oil and gas distrihutors teachers print-
ers and so fot :h In such types of insur-
ance the policy cannot be cancelled for
any individual in the group but it can be
cancelled for the entire group after cer-
tain procedures of notification One rea-
son that group policies can be Avorked out
like this is because special committees
study the program association lawyers
get with lawyers from the company and
go over each phase and paragraph and
the groups can take advantage of certain
occupational advantages by getting special
