Farm Notcs

Harry F James county agent tells
the following: The loss from grain I
diseases particularly smut of what
barley and oats often exceeds OH
x‘little tax the farmer has to pay to
the county state and national gov-1
ernments
Here are two lilt hod that will I
help control smut in oats:
Dip Method Directions
Dip half-filled sacks of seed tied
at the top into a solution of one
pound uf formaldehyde to 40 gallons
of vater until seed is thoroughly wet
Drain and dry the seed two Itours to
overnight then sow in moist soil or
spread out thinly to dry and aerate
until ready tor sowing This is very
effective for all grains when seed
has been thoroughly cleaned at it
sures absolute disinfection of each
kernel of seed
Spray Method Directions
Ute an ordinary sprayer filled with
a solution of one pound formalde-
hyde to one pint of water This
quantity of solution is sufficient for
tin bushels for fewer bushels use
correspondingly smaller quantity of
formaldehyde solution Spray grain
conilantly as it is shoveled from one
pile to another The seed should bel
covered for two hours or overnight
anti should then be sown in moist
soil preferably the day after treat
ing This is ttn easy method to ap-
ply but should be used only in treat-
ing hose and covered smuts- of oats
