Early college courses
a good idea
by Mike Duncan
High school seniors may not be aware of a new
policy adopted late last summer by the state regents
allowing them to take up to four college courses
during each semester.
Only 150 high schoolers in Oklahoma took part in
the new policy last semester. It is restricted to
seniors who have completed most of their
requirements for graduation.
Rather than a lack of interest, educators hope the
low participation is due to a lack of knowledge that
the opportunity exists.
The pilot program will take a while to catch on but
hopefully it will benefit future college students. Many
are unprepared to handle college level courses
because of an early lack of exposure to such
difficulty in high school.
Also, the added semesters to a two year junior
college curriculum will benefit those students in
some areas who are having to take heavy loads in
order to graduate.
The idea is a good one and it needs to be
continued.
