Beginning freshmen take part in a two-day Freshman Orientation
program Thursday and Friday, Aug. 29-30, in preparation for the beginning
of classes at Eastern Monday. Sept. 2. The early starting date will enable
students to complete the first semester Dec. 20. allowing a longer Christmas

other man was killed Fearlessly.
Bevel again entered the kill zone
and moved to the dead man, Dulling
him to a better location from which
he could be further evacuated.
His valorous actions enabled
friendly forces to call in more
effective indirect fire on the enemy
and contributed immeasurably to
the defeat of the enemy force
Bevel s personal bravery,
aggressiveness, and devotion to
duty are in keeping with the highest
traditions of the military service
and reflects great credit upon
himself, his unit and the United
States Army."
Bevel is now serving as a
Chaplains assistant and will return
from Vietnam in late November.
His wife, Kathryn, resides at
Bartlesville.

Texas Tech Rodeo is Jess Gatlin
former student from Poteau
Gatlin's team from Oklahoma State
University came out on top in th,
rodeo in May.

Sp4 Tom Bevel, Eastern student
during 1966-57, has been awarded
the Silver Star Medal for gallantry
in action Feb. 1 while serving with
the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
Bevel, who worked as
photographer for the newspaper
and yearbook at Eastern, was a
1966 graduate of Talihina high
school
By direction of the president,
the award was dated July 14. The
citation read:
“Bevel distinguished himself by
heroic action while serving as a
rifleman with Company D, 27th
Infantry on a combat operation in
Gia Dinh province, Vietnam.
“Pinned down by heavy enemy
fire, Bevel immediately crawled
fifty meters under intense enemy
machine gun fire to the aid of two
casualties.
“While he was pulling one
sponsored by the Lions as
welcome to new students
campus.

examinations after holidays.
Freshmen meet in the college
auditorium at 8:30 a.m. Thursday
for general instructions given by
college administrators.
Jerry Vandagriff, president of
the Student Senate from Antlers,
will preside at the first general
session which marks the beginning
of Eastern’s 60th year Dr J. N.
Baker, president of Eastern since
1961, will give the welcome.
Freshmen hear Procedures
Freshmen who did not enroll
early during the summer will hear
an explanation of enrollment
procedures at 9:30 a.m. after which
they will take the American College
Testing (ACT) program test.
An explanation of test scores
will be given the freshmen at 1 p m
in the auditorium followed by
division meetings for freshmen w ho
did not enroll in the summer.
Division meetings will be
Agriculture, G-107; Business,
M-201; Engineering and Science,
S-101, Home Economics, G-201;
Industrial Education, IE 106.
Liberal Arts. Mitchell Auditorium,
and students who haven’t decided
upon a major field of study will
meet in L-106.
At the division meetings
freshmen will meet their advisers
and receive enrollment times.
2nd Session at 7 p.m.
Freshman Orientation will be at 7
p.m. in the auditorium. Senate Pies
Vandagriff will present other
Senate officers and explain student
organizations and activities on
campus.
Student Handbooks will be
distributed and explained at this
session
A student-faculty watermelon
mixer, sponsored by the Senate,

Wilburton’s Lions Club will
sponsor its annual Student Talent
Show Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the
college auditorium at 7 p.m.
Participants will compete for
prizes of $25, 15 10 for first,
second and third selections.
Students having special talent in
any field such as music, singing,
recitations. or skits, are being
encouraged to participate in the
show. Interested students should
contact Bob Pratt in the Fine Arts
building
All students attending the show
will register at the door for free
prizes donated by the merchants of
Wilburton. The show will be a
combination of student entertainers
and drawings for an assortment of
prizes.
Last year Danny Knight, Deer
Creek, sang his way to first place
with Libby Wann, Wilburton,
placing second and Joe Randazzo
and Arnold Cochran. McAlester,
third
Jim Wright is the Lions club
chairman for the annual Talent
