What were considered “Popu
listic Heresies” some twenty
years ago are now accepted by
both the leading political parties
of the country Then the initi-
ative the referendum and the
recall were scouted at as being
undeserving of the notice of sane
and safe men Now we all know
that all except those who are
prejudiced or are afraid of them
are in favor of them or at least
in favor of the principles therein
evolved If there is anything in
the meaning of democracy it
means government by the
people and there is nothing in
either of the three which can be
construed as being inimical to
democracy It is not enough to
condemn effectively anything
or any principle of government
by shouting “populistic” Even
the leaders of the republican
party are earnestly advocating
many things which they a few
short years ago railed at and de-
clared to be perfectly absurd
Most of the opposition to these
three principles of government
come from those holding office
Either the office holder distrusts
the people or he distrusts him-
self if he opposes the initiative
the referendum and the recall
We now nominate candidates
everywhere by referendum vote
Everybody concedes it is the
ideal way to select candidates
The whole country is drifting to
the initiative and there is a well
grounded belief in the minds of
the people in favor of the recall
It must be admitted however
that there are many lawyers
who are conscientiously opposed
to all three of these principles
simply because there is no an-
cient precedent for them A law
yer must have precedent aa his
legal mind is schooled to that
belief The time will come when
these things will be precedents
themselves and there will be no
opposition from that source
Even now there are hundreds of
lawyers who espouse the causes
so deserving in these great prin-
ciples The world is growing
better
Waurika is preparing to enter-
tain a large throng of people

three and W T F Bush of
Waurika The first two are
