unloaded the boxcar in an afternoon. I was just sore for a
week.
While it was in the high 90's outside that boxcar, it was
much warmer on the inside. There was virtually no circulation
of air and it seemed, even less air to breath. It was demanding
to say the least.
It was not the kind of work that required a lot of thought to
complete the task, so it allowed time for one to think about
other things. It was in that boxcar that I found the inspiration
that would bring me to where I am today.
I asked myself the question, do I want to do this or
something similar to this for the rest of my life. My answer
was no. no, no! It was then and there that I resolved to finish
my education at the earliest possible date.
My father had strongly encouraged me not to quit school.
He said if I really wanted to be responsible and provide for my
family, I needed to hang in there. It was in the boxcar that I
realized once again that he was indeed a very smart man.
Time of course changes how we look at things. As I think
about it now, that boxcar almost takes on a manly, robust kind
of experience, but in my heart I know it was just pure sweat
and torture.
We all face our boxcars, how we deal with them determines
where we go and what we become. Here's hoping you will
