Tornado
Information
This year the Weather Bureau
wilt furnish advice of impending
revere weather and tornadoes in
only two forms: (1) Forecasts of
Tornadoes and Severe Thunder-
storms and (2) Tornado Warn-
ings Tornado and severe thund-
erstorm forecasts will indicate
that during specified periods
within rather large areas of about
2000 square miles severe thund-
erstorm activitv and tornadees
are possible This does not mean
that each community within that
area will have a tornado but it
irav have a severe thunderstorm
A Severe Thunderstorm is defin-
ed as thunderstorm with damag-
ing winds over 75 miles per hour are very valuable for local storm

rain or hail Tornado warnings nado sightings and movement

back to the -radar by the concen-
tration of rain and hail within
the thunderstorm The direction
and distance of the storm are de-
termined by the time lag between
the transmitted and reflected sig-
nal Occasionally in some more
distant thunderstorms there is
not enough moisture to reflect a
strong signal to the radar unit
While damage from these storms
is usually not great notice of
these circumstances will be fur-
nished by the Weather Bureau to
the areas affected
In addition to radar storm de-
tection visual sightings of tor-
nadoes furnish the bas for tor-
tado warnings The Oklahoma
Highway Patrol has pledged their
cooperation again this year in
tracking tornadoes and verifying
that there are tornadoes associat-
ed with severe thunderstorms
