hCREST HUMAN
BEBADCI1EE
A’case that has attracted more
haa ordinary attention this week
nil one that will arouse the blood
n the veins ot every human being
vh beleives in decency and clean
norals has been before Judge B
i P-mith in the arrest and trial of
ne Milt Gassoway a man -well
mown to the community and
lot bearin the best reputation
Gassoway was arrested Mon-
lay night by City Marshal Scaggs
nd Officer Spurlock and charges
Preferred against him under a city
rdinance for maintaining a
irawdy house The facts as near
s the Democrat is able to obtain
hum places Gassoway in the
ight of being the lowest type of
nan V) Last Saturday he secured
l marriage license to wed Miss
illiao Smith a good looking
1 1 id well appearing young lady
vho recently -came here from
tVaynesville - North Carolina
The couple were married Satur-
lay afternoon by County Judge
Wyand' Gassoway took his bride
o a room over the Hunter-
Hood building on Main street
nd within a few hours proceeded
o prostitute his position as hus-
land by soliciting men to make
lis wife a few hours a-fprostitute
igainst her will The new Mrs
kjassoway was without money
ind in a strange land and she
stated tnat she was compelled to
submit fo the debauching influence
of her ’ husband! She tells a
traight story of being threatened
by Gaavoway if she ventured
rom the room or failed to submit
p the advances of the men who
vere brought tocher room by him
To uncover the case Scaggs and
vSpurlock employed a man with
I marked coins to catch the culprit
"jvhicb was done red handed the
me evidence being ot such a na-
ture as to be unprintable ii the
Democrat Mrs Gassoway went
on the stand and told her s’ory
which was damning to thte man
under arrest (
It appears from the statement
obtained from the woman that
she came to this section to marry
a man in the Supply country
named Kelley and for reasons
satisfactory to her she settled down
after coming here and it was then
she met up with Gassoway who
inveigled her into marriage with
the result as stated above
The case borders closely on the
’white slave traffic” but owing to
the fact that Gassoway had not
induced Miss Smith to come here
t is hardly likely that he can be
convicte J on this kind of a charge
But as the case stands it is dark
enought to cause the manhood of
every citizen of this city and
county to raise in wrath that there
is such a monster and debauched
humji being living in the borders
of Woodward and that there is
no penalty severe enough to deal
with the case goes without ques-
tion "
There has been complaint filed
against Gassoway before the coun-

Stanfield wrote v Governor Cruce
Friday in certifying to the evi-
dence in the case of France Hawk-
ins given the death sentence in
Sequoyan county for a particular-
ly brrital murder "It appears to
me that human life has become a
very cheap in this locality” Judge
Stanfield continues “and an ex-
ample in this community would
undoubtedly work to the benefit of
good citizenship and taxpayers of
the county”
Judge Stanfield relates that
Hawkins and one Price were
jointly charged with murder
Hawkins was tried first and given
the death sentence' Price was
tried later and escaped with life
imprisonment and has appealed
Judge Stanfield urges that the
governor suspend sentence on
Hawkins until a final determin-
ation is made of Price’s case and
if Pripe- obtains a new trial and
escapes ultimately with life im-
prisonment Hawkins’ sentence
should be commuted to life im-
prisonment also
“It is my opinion” says Judge
Stanfield “that both should have
paid the death penalty for this
crime but he thinks that if Price
“the stronger of the two and
probably the more brutal” should
get out with a life sentence Hawk-
