A CHINESE REPUBLIC
Old China awaking out of its
torpid sleep of ages has thrown
of the yoke declared a republic
and actually has held an election
and seemingly one wise provision
was the majority man getting to
he president then the less success-
ful ones receiving the next high-
est offices The right of lhe indi-
vidual citizen as a factor not on-
ly Government but' the real foun-
dation of it has began to dawn
upon even the Pagan nations
who for centuries have been led
to believe their head ruler was
lhe son of Sun— one ot the fixt-
ures of creation Yet where the
people rose up and demanded a
popular government the son of
Sun pjjt up a very poor fight His
army had lost faith in his Divinity
and he was licked just like any
other weakling The hollow
mocking of the Divine right of
kings has received in this genera-
tion a good many severe jolts
Look how Japan woke up Even
now the Dardanelles the entry
into Southern Europe has been a
closed gate guarded by the Turks
But now he has troubles of his
own He is so busy keeping
Italy from his front yard that he is
unable to keep that gate guarded
The Suez Canal Panama Canal
the opening of the Dardanelles
are all a part of that greater force
that is now tearing down the idols
of the’ ’ past— controlled ' traffic
The world must know and recog'
nize the right of man to trade-in
the markets with no arbitrary
gates to collect tribue from him
ED CARPENTER

A SURE ENOUGH
DROUTH NOW
Orders just issued by the Fed
eral government and these are
done to the express and railway
companies no more booze will
be shipped to be delivered in that
portion of Oklahoma known
the old Indian Territory :
My wont it lie dry down t ere
There will be much traveling to
Texas points and to Oklahoma
City to where 'the Budweizer
fttwrand the Kentucky juice bear-
irig'the flavor of mint and things
'This is the beginning of things as
they should be’ The Fede' al
government should respect the
pblice regulations of the state en-
force this law as well as ell others
While we 'doubt the wisdom as a
means to the end yet we believe
in-enforcing all laws

ALLEGED FIREBUG
IS UNDER ARREST
State Fire Marshall C C Ham-
monds was notifiied Friday of
the arrest at Butler of W K Rise
charged with setting fire to the
the new plant of the Butler elec
trie Light Co which? was dam-
aded by fire to the amount of
$1000 Dec 5 Rise was bound
over in the sum of $1000 bond
to await a hearing on a charge of
incendiarism
The fire marshall also received
a report of a fire at Lahoma Fri-
day morning at 12:35 p’clock
when the store of W G H Mur-
ray and T E Diemon was dam-
aged to the extent of $900 The
fire is being investigated
jParties believe'd to have burned
the barn owned by Albert Bender
located four miles east of Prague
ca urday morning have made
their escape A loss to the build-
ing and contents amounting to
$3300 or $3500 was reported
no insurance
It is by slow insiduous uncon-
scious processes that the great In-
terests have secured 'tfieir advant
age over the general public No
people on earth ever did or ever
will surrender in one transaction
so many of their rignts and so
much of their liberties as the peo-
ple of the United States have sur-
rendered one at a time to finan-
cial and industrial kings
The people are just beginning
to sec the situation Our "kings”
are still blind to it They are un-
conscious ot the fact that they
have usurped power that does not
belong to them and that they
are exerting influences that are in- J
juriousand unjust
Price of Meat to Tumble
Chicago Dec 16— Prices of
fresh meat are expected to begin
tailing within two weeks and quick-
ly go to the lowest level known in
years as the result ot Great Brit-
tatn’s refusal to permit the mi’lion-
aire Chicago packers to bid for
contracts for supplying the British
army and navy with $25 '00090
worth of fresh meats during the
next year
Unless the packers" who have
been supplying the British war
forces with meats foryears find a
means to sell their products thru
third parties they to-day admit-
ted there will be a large oversup-
ply of fresh meats in the United
States The oversupply will ne-
cessitate quick and heavy cuts in
prices ' -
WALL STREET
NOT IN CONTROLL
The Stanley investigating com-
mittee of the House will contin-
ue its probe of the steel trust
The efforts of Wall Street to
bring the investigation to a halt
have failed
- It being obvious that the House
will not heed the command of
special privilege to stop the in-
vestigation it is even doubtful
now whether the proposition of
forcing the investigating commit-
tee to abandon ' its inquiry will
ever come up on the floor of the
House But if the matter does
come up it is certain that the
House will stand by the commit-
mittee and order it to go on with
the hearing '
This marks a new order of
things In the past the steel trust
has been able to have bills side-
tracked delayed aud finally chlo-
roformed in committees of the
House " All is is today impossi-
ble The Chicago beef barons
charged with conducting a trust
to squeeze the people on the price
6f beef declare they are innocent’
Which would lead one to think
they would be in a hnrry to get to
trial Query: Have they been
battling in one court after another
for mne years just to keep the
public from finding out thAt they
are innocent?
