Washington--Not for years have so
many far reaching principles relatink
to interstate commerce been approved
by the supreme court of the United
States as were established in its demi
pions Monday as the unquestioned law
- of the land Decisions on several oth-
er difficult questions also were an-
nounced '
Among the questions of interatate
- commerce decided were: -
' That the passenger has no right to
---' buy tickets with services advertising
releases or property nor can the rail:-
road company buy services advertis-
ing releassk or property with trans-
portation '
That a state law regulating the size
of crews on trains within the state is
not an obstruction to interstate coal-
merce but rather is enacted in aid of
Interstate commerce and may be
passed by a state for the public safety
That the supreme court will review
the validity of an order of the inter-
state commerce commission even
though the (we year limitation has ex--
That a railway system may not es
cape regulation as an instrument ol
interstate commerce because one of its
constituent parts is a wharf company
and dominating power over the wharf-
age company rests in the fact that it is
a bolding company
-
-That the interstate commerce com-
mission does not possess the power to
- reduce a rate as "unjust and unreas-
onable" merely because the rate is in
equitable under some circumstances as
in oases where railroads induce ship-
perm to enter a field by offering rates
as low aisle be unremunerative and
later increase the rates
- The court furthermore decided as
constitutional a state statute providing
that no contract of relief brevit or in-
sul'ance should be a bar to the right of
a railroad employe engaged in the op-
eration of a railroad to- sue the em-
ployer for damages resulting from in-
juries received in the -course of his
-- employment '

A Fairly Wet World
The Pacific ocean covers 63000000
miles the Atlantic 30000000 and the
Indian Arctic and Antarctic 42000000
To stow away the contents of the Pa
elfin it would be necessary to fill a
tank one mile long one mile wide and
one mile deep every day for 440 years
Put in figures the Pacific holds in
weight 94000000000000e000000 tors
The Atlantic averages a depth of
not quite three—miles Its water weighs
325000000000000000000 tons and a
tank to contain it would have each of
its sides 430 miles long The figures
of the other -oceans are in the same
startling proportions It would take
all the sea water in the world 2000000
years to flow over Niagara

Signer Puccini although celebrated
all over the-world for his operas is
still a young man On the subject of
his early monies the Italian composer
said recently in New York: -
"I have been very lucky Recogni-
tion for artistic work comas Do often
after one to too old to enjoy it -
'I remember one of my country-
men a centenarian who had be died
before seventy would never have seen
any of his operas produced Luckily
he lived to so great an age that he re-
ceived for many years the admiration
be deserved Naturally - enough
though this -splendid artist regretted
his years of obscurity and neglect
and he frequently spoke bitterly of
his bad fortune -
'Ino at Um very end of his long
life -an Englishman entered hii box
at the opera in Rome and said re-
spectfully: - -
"'I have traveled all the war from
London to see the author of my fa-
vorite opera' -
"The veteran composer with a ma-
licious smile replied:
"Well by Mend I have given you
plenty of time to get here'"
- His Head Was Hard
It is a common belief that the ne
gro's head is bard capable of Irith-
standing almost any blow
The following story told of a Promi-
nent young Sentist of Danville
would seem to indicate something of
the kind anyhow Two negro men
were- employed on tearing down a
three-story brick building One ne-
gro was on top of the building taking
off the bricks and sliding them down
a narrow wooden chute to the ground
some thirty feet below where the
other was picking them up and piling
them
When this latter negro was stoop-
ing over to pick up a brick the former
socidentally let one fall striking him
directly on the head -
-Instead of its killing him be merely
looked up without rising iiind said:
"What you doin thar nigger you
made me bite my tongue"—The Cir

not?' Of course you don't know it
but I can really bark lots more like
a dog than you" --
