ly reports all out and gone not a single
member of the force could be persuad-
ed to resign
Postmaster J R Cartwright seemed
somewhat elated as he stated that the
past year’s business exceeded that of
the previous year
No no dear people the business of
Uhcle Sam has not gone to the bow-
wows And here is hoping that Friend
Postmaster will find it necessary to
Install another of those up-town can-
celing machines before the close of the
year ahead of us

Church said Tuesday that a "four
paddle" ping pong set had been order-
ed to provide entertainment at the pro-
posed Men's Club in the basement of
the church "If the ping pong set ar-
rives in time the club will open at
7:30 o’clock Friday night" declared

Rev Carpenter is enlisting the aid
of local organizations in making an
appeal to Frank Reed Neosho Mo to
build a wading pool in Shattuck
“After the wading pool has been
made possible then we expect to go
after the Job of erecting a library

ed that he was heartily in favor of any-
thing for the good of this community
and would not be selfish enough to
insist that the Methodist Church re-
ceive credit or favor but let these
things be to the betterment of the en-
tire community

Outgoing Sheriff
Never Owned Gun
Mrs Mabel Bassett commissioner of
charities and corrections once made
the report following a visit with Sheriff
J D Thomas at Arnett that she had
found a county sheriff who never car-
ried a gun much less owned one She
believed it to be the only case of its
kind known in tire 77 counties of Okla-
homa J D Thomas who has served this
county as sheriff for the past six years
and who turned the Job over to Dick
Walton on Monday of this week said
that this report of Mrs Bassett was
correct and that he always managed
to keep peace in the county without
even owning a gum
RECOVERING FROM OPERATION
Bill Bell 19-year old son of Mrs
Chas Bell south of Shattuck under-
went an operation last Saturday morn-
ing at the Shattuck Hospital for the
removal of his appendix
He is reported doing very nicely
SARAH STABEL CALLED
Funeral services for Mrs Sarah Sta-
bel whose death occured on Jan 4
was held at the M E Church in Shat
tuck Sunday at 2 o’clock She was
49 years of age
Interment was in the Adventist Cem
ctery six miles south of Shattuck
Mrs J W Prather left Monday
for Wichita where she will spend a
few days then go to Castleton to visit
her daughter Mrs Helen Schwartz
Mrs Jess Bussard spent the week-
end In Lipscomb visiting her daughter

vested excepting cotton which will be
out of the way by the middle of Jan'
uary Cotton may make a heavier
total yield than preliminary estimates
showed as the crop turned out to be
better toward the end of harvest than
at the beginning
Wheat made a fine growth before
winter officially set in affording ex-
ceptional pasturage
Livestock still is ranging the fields
and Is In excellent condition to go on
grain feed when the time comes
Fanners in the southern counties
have begun to tune up their machinery

On Duty Monday
The offices of County Sheriff As-
sessor and Court Clerk were In the
hands of officers elected Monday The
change-up was made immediately after
the county commissioners convened
J D Thomas said goodbye to the
sheriff’s office after serving six years
and one month and Wiley (Dick) Wal-
ton assumed the duties of preserving
the peace of the county O A Black
will continue oq the Job as under-
sheriff Harry Shields retiring assessor turn-
ed the duties of that office over to
the man who has served as his deputy
for sometime Ralph Drake The lat-
ter is “at home” in that office and no
doubt will continue giving taxpayers
good friendly service
Mr Benger court clerk shakes the
duties of that office off his shoulders
and loads them onto the shoulders of

These three are the only changes the
law provides for on the first Monday
of the month Others will change In
the weeks to come

Friday Night
Three places of business in Shat-
tuck are known to have been broken
into during last Friday night Both
the James Grain Company and the
Higgins Grain Company offices were
entered as well as the office of the
Hagen Oil Company
At the James Grain Company office
the safe combination was broken off
but the safe was not entered reports
stated
The Higgins Crain Company fared
less fortunate The bolt of the safe was
driven out resulting in entry Fifteen
to twenty dollars were taken
The Hagen Oil Company office was
entered and all the records thoroughly
scattered About five or six dollars In
change was taken os were also two
cigars from an almost full box
Thomas Lad Injured
By Fcdl Into Cellar
Tommy the 6-year old son of Supt
and Mrs Lawrence Thomas was in-
jured last Friday noon when he fell
into the concrete cellar at the family
home
The lad landed on his face first one
tooth being knocked out and an ugly
gash being cut under his chin
