York company's vessel* are all under
the protertien of the British flag.
This action should set aside all rumors !
that the «(mpany intends to transfer its!
vessel* to American registry.
A resumption of shipping by the
Standard Oil 'company of New York
means that the company's operat'ons
will probably be put on a normal basis
within a short time Offieern and
directors of the company dally have been
considering the shipping question since
outbreak of the war in Europe, and
seyrnl davs past have only been
Iting the adjustment of certain con
dltions before ordering a resumption of
exports.
From present Indications the Europ-
ean war will not have nearly so serious
«ffort on the New York company's af-
'alrs as had boon ••xpeeted. The com-
pany's business In the far east has boen
going on Just as usual, owing to the fact
ihat large stocks of Standard Oil pro-
ducts were held In that territory, and
even In Turkey and flreeee, the com-
panys' European field, there has been
no Interruption to business.
In this respect th.' NVw York com-
pany is far more fortunate than the
Standard Oil company of N' w Jersey
with its flest of «>rniRn vessels tied up.

NOMK, Sept. 1.—The gasoline schooner
King and Winge, which which has arrived
here from Point Harrow. Alaska, brought
news that Viljalmur Stefansson, the
plorer, with two companions, set out
from Martin Point, easr of the mouth of
the Barter river March 22 last with si*
dogs, a sled and two rifles, heading
straight north over the Ice In search of

others accompanied Stefansson sixteen
days due north on the sea lee and then
returned, reaching shore April lf>.
Before starting. Stefansson left orders
with Dr. Rudolph M. Anderson, his lieu-

Banks land.
Stefansson may not be heard from for
two years, his assistants say.

Sprugue Brooks, an ornithologist from
Harvard university, was reported aboard
the revenue cutter Bear. He was a mem-
ber of the Stefansson party and was
picked up at Point Barrow, where he had
been taken from Denuirkation Point on
schooner Anna Olga. The King and

sailors from the Whaler Elvira which
was crushed by th" Arctic ice nearly s
year ago. The ship wrecked party In-

Arctic Whaling Tr iding company. These
men w<*re transferred from the stenm

having been cured for aboard since the
