and Japanese troops August 13 Ac-
cording to these reports 5000 Chinese
troops attacked Japanese forces which
had been detailed to guard Fing Nang
passea northwest of Corea and event-
ually succeeded in driving the Japanese
from their position A large number
of Coreans flocked to the Chinese stand-
ard boggiug for arms and asking for
permission to form an advance guard
of the Chinese forces moving against
the Japanese
August 14th the Chinese were rein-
forced by 40u0 troops from Y'i Chow
and on the day following they atta ked
the Japanese lines at Chung Ho with
the result that the Japanese retreated
August 16 the Chinese army was
further reinforced by 13000 fresh
troops and on August 1(4 attacked the
Japanese who aro said to have lost
4000 and their heavy baggage August
15 on Tatung river thirteen Japanese
warships attacked by the Chinese who
opened fire upon them causing the loss
