HASKELL DEFEATS GRUGE
FOR FIRST GOVENRORSHIP
Crucc Issues Statement— Says Party
Success is More Important than
Individual Ambition
The last returns received at
Democratic headquarters at Okla-
homa City Saturday gave C N
I Haskell the nomination for gov-
ernor over LeeCruce by above 3
000 majority and at the state con-
vention Tuesday he was declared
the Democratic nominee
Surprising to all the vote in the
primary will reach almost a hun-
dred thousand
Conceding his defeat Hon Lee
Cruce Saturday evening issued
the following statement:
“The returns so far received
from the Democratic primary held
last Saturday leave little doubt in
my mind that upon the face of the
returns a plurality of the vote cast
for Governor has been polled for
Hon C N Haskell The exact
plurality will not be definitely
known until the the official count
is made by the executive committee
No matter how small the plurality
may be I shall submit to the will
of my party as expressed at the
primary and shall loyally support
Its nominees With me the suc-
cess of the party in the new State
means much more than the grati-
fication of any personal ambition I
have ever entertained I believe
firmly in the principles of the
Democratic party and confidently
hope to see these principles prevail
in the organization of our State
Government Whatever aid or
influence I can lend to the accom-
plishment of this purpose will be
gladly given I have always been
a consistent supporter of the Demo-
cratic party and have given it my
support as a matter of principle
and not as one of policy
“The result of the primary is a
surprise and a disappointment to
me but surprises are always in
order for the candidate for office
and the disappointment in nowise
lessens my faith in the wisdom of
the masses of our people It is
useless to speculate what cause or
causes brought about my defeat
A sufficient reason may be found
in the statement that a plurality
of those participating in the
primary preferred another as their
standard bearer The campaign
has been in many respects a re-
( markable one but I have the
consolation of knowing that I have
done no wrong to anyman in all
this controversy and not a word or
act of mine can be used to the hurt
of Democracy in the approaching
struggle
“I go back to my home and my
business with a conscience abso-
lutely void of offense and shall
as a private citizen do all that I
can to advance the interests of the
new State in which I expect to live
The happiness and welfare of her
people shall be my chief concern
and there is no sasrifice I would
not hesitate to make in the inter-
ests of the people of the Common
wealth To those who opposed
my nomination I have not a harsh
word to offer in criticism Many
things were charged against ms
during the progress of the cam-
paign that sorely grieve and
wounded me If those charges
were honestly made the parties
making them will sooner or later
find out the wrong they have done
me and as honest men will do what
they can to correct them To
those who repeated these charges
for the purpose of injuring me if
any such there be I can only say
‘I forgive’
“To my friends who by the
thousands have loyally supported
me I publicly express my thanks
No man ever ran for office who had
more devoted followers than I
have had in this contest I came
before the people of the State
practically a stranger asking at
their hands the highest honor they
will ever bestow upon any man
and I am certainly proud of the
fact that so many thousands have
rallied to my support I hope the
time may come when I can in a
measure show to them what I feel
in my heart and somewhat repay
them for their allegiance to my
cause
“To John B Doolin of Alva
who had charge of my campaign
I especially offer my thanks and
want to say publicly to the people
of Oklahoma that no man of
greater honor or purer heart lives
within the borders of the new
State To me it is especially
gratifying to state that during the
trying times of the campaign no
suggestion of dishonest practice
ever came to his lips
“And now to the people of the
State let me urge that the subject
of prime importance to the whole
people is the procuring of state-
hood The only way to obtain
statehood is to ratify the Constitu-
tion The Constitution is in my
judgment a splendid instrument
and should receive the support of
every citizen in the State who
really desires statehood”
LEE CRUCE
Other surprises which the last
returns brought gave the nomina-
tion of T‘ P Gore for United
States Senator over Roy Hoffman
J S Murray for Labor Com-
missioner over Chas Daugherty
and A P Watson over Pitman
and Field for Corporation Com-
missioner The commissioners
elected are J J McAlester J Y
Callahan and A P Watson

SACK OF GOLD NOT THERE
Tales of Woe Coming From West
Texas and New Mexico
That sack of gold supposed to
have been discovered at the end
of the rainbow in West Texas
and New Mexico seems to have
disappeared judging from the
many letters being received here
now telling of the fears of the i
drougth with which that country I
is always more or less afflicted
Many letters are being received
which tell of the failure of
money to grow on trees out there
and most all close up their sad
stories by advising their friends
to stay in Indian Territory where
the only necessity to insure good
crops is to tickle the soil Many
are longing to be back here in
the land of plenty and next fall
will probably witness a great
exodus from the natural home of
drougths sand storms rattle
snakes and lizzards
These wild west fevers like? we
had last year come about every
ten years Thousands take the
fever and go out there only to
become disgusted after a years
trial and return to their former
homes poorer but wiser
One man who went out there
last fall came back a few days
ago He says the country is ab-
solutely worthless as a farming
country 'and he advises all to stay
here He says that ten acres of

spot in my heart for those who were
against me Hoping their success will
prove beneficial to the people and I
will promise for one as all patriotic
men should do to use all of my limited
abilit to make it a success (One per-
