An Ingenious lady has suggested an
Improvement In the method of hold-
ing a needle for the purpose of thread-
ing it. It is to be held between the
third and little fingers of the left hand.
Instead of by the thumb and fore-
finger, palm uppermost. The advan-
tage of this is that the thumb and first
finger can be used to grip the smallest
end of the thread as soon as it pro-
trudes from the eye, a method prefer-
able to that of letting go the thread
and endeavoring to get hold of the end
with the right hand. This prevents
tue weight of the cotton from drag-
ging the end out of the eye again.

Commanded the Flae'hlp Krle In the

China Sea.
There died in Rome, Italy, a few
weeks ago one of the old-time ante-
bellum heroes of the United States
navy. The exploits of the new navy—
the white squadrons—are known to the
uew generation, and the older remem-
ber only the names of Porter and Far-
ragut. But in the days before the civil
war in the United States Capt. Thomas
Jefferson Page was a familiar figure in
naval annals. He commanded the flag-
Bhip Erie when a midshipman, discov-
ered a new channel in New York har-
bor, fought Malay pirates in tho China
seas, negotiated the treaties of amity
and commerce with the South Ameri-
can republics, explored the La Plata
river, refused an admiral's commission
in the Italian navy, and built the con-
federate navy during the civil war. Al-
though his last active service had been
g'ven to the enemy of the union, his
dying request was that he be buried
•with the Stars and Stripes about him.
Capt. Page was in his 92d year at
the time of his death. He was of
proud old Virginia stock, having been
born at Shelby, Gloucester county, Va.,
Shelby being part of the great Hose-
well estate, on the York river. His
father, an eminent Virginia lawyer,
was the eldest son of the famous Gov.
John Page of Rosewell. His mother
■was a daughter of Major-General Thos.
Nelson, also governor of Virginia, and

Off tape Hatteras it was a battle
for life or death, but the old ship
weathered the gale and Midshipman
Page triumphantly carried the Erie
into Norfolk, landed the sick without
the loss of a single man on the voy-
age, and with boyish glee read some
complimentary notices of his short
command iiuthe paper of the day. After
a period of shore duty at the observa-
tory, Washington, an expedition to ex-
plore the basin of La Plata and to as-
certain the condition of the country
and its people, in view of future trade
with the United States, was decided
upon by the government, and the com-
mand was given Jefferson Page. Capt.
Page was engaged over seven years of
his professional life in this work, and
considered It of great importance, for
the commercial interests of the United
States. Capt. Page reached home from
his last expedition a few days before
the outbreak of hostilities between
North and South. The day of Vir-
ginia secession Capt. Page gave in his
resignation and gave over to the navy
department all the papers and charts
of the second expedition. Thus ended
abruptly his career in the United States
navy.
The evening following Capt. Page
left Washington for Virginia. For two
years he filled important land com-
mands and began the building on York
river of the little fleet of gunboats.
The evacuation of Yorktown obliged
his retreat, and the nearly completed
boats were burned by the retreating
party.
Capt. Page was soon after sent to
Europe with the rank of commodore to
bring out the two ironclads built for
the confederate government in Eng-

a signer of the Declaration of Inde-
pendence. The widowed mother of
Jefferson Page was much surprised—
for she had made no application—to
receive an official document from the
war department, offering her two ap-
pointments to West Point for her son,
"as some recognition of his father's
distinguished services." Her young-
est son preferred the navy, and he was
appointed midshipman and sent off to
the school ship at Norfolk. There
was no naval academy in those days,
and the youth of the navy scrambled
up the tree of knowledge as they could.
Fortunately young Page, for a boy
of his age, was well advanced in math-
ematics and the classics. After a few
months on the school ship he was
ordered to the flagship Erie, bound for
the West Indies.
Page was the youngest midshipman
aboard, but by a strange train of clr- | refused, whereupon he
cumstances it was his lot to command
the flagship for fifteen days before his
cruise was ended. The Erie had been
out nearly three years and was about
to return home, when the yellow fever
broke out with great virulence and for
forty-eight hours made great havoc.
The captain sent for Midshipman Page
and said to him: "I am a sick man and
all our officers are down with the fe-
ver; here is an appointment for you as
acting lieutenant. Take us home;
steer for Norfolk."
Page took charge, and, with the aid
land. They were completely finished,
equipped, and ready for service. JBut
after the vigorous diplomatic action of
the United States minister, Mr. Charles
Francis Adams, the British govern-
ment took possession of the "iron-
clads" and added them to its own navy,
where they are still in commission.

on account of anti-British comments
on the Boer war. The proceeding is
most unusual, especially as one of the
delinquents is a nobleman, Lord Emly,

might have another Ladysmith in Ire-
