knowing his error, listened with dis-

The silent coxswain pushed off, but,
passing under the stern of the trawler,

shouted:

mand great cause for concern
In a fierce attack between Smorgon

French Holding Their Own.
Grand Headquarters of the French
| Army in France —The watchword of
the French troops at Verdun—"they
shall not pass"—has applied equally
I to the Champagne, and the French
Bhowed the crown prince's army that
; the Chemin Des Dames was a closed
road to It. Sunday the Germans made
In great force their fortieth attempt
Bince the French captured Craonne,
May 4, to get possession of the famous
road. This effort was one of their big-
gest offensive movements since Ver
dun.
The gain of a few hundred yards of
a front line trench, which Is all that
remains ln German hands, appears
small compensation for the fierce fight-
ing In the forty attacks of the last
ten weeks, during which conservative
estimates place German losses near
the Ohemin-Des Dames alone In six
figures.

Germans have been unable to approach
the encampment and have been beaten

line.

how great is the economy effected. So
far as the alterations rendered neces-

are concerned, the only additional ex-
