THE BELGIAN RELIEF FUND.
There Is no reason why contributing to tlfc fund for the relief of the
Belgians should interfere with local charities. Caring for the poor at
home is a duty which Shawnee people have always assumed. It is.there
fora in the nature of a regular obligation. Contributing to the Belgian
fund is an extra or special obligation which the people of the community
should willingly undertake at this Christmas season. The poor we have
"s With J. but in the aid of the Belgians the American people have
the chanoe of ages to show their true spirit of brotherly love We ™
turo the assertion that the larger the contributions to the Belgian re let
fund, the larger will be the contributions to the local charities. Giving
begets giving; it Is contagious.
THE NEW UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT.
Rev. F. M. Masters of Ardmore haB accepted the offer of the presi-
dency of the Oklahoma Baptist University, has resigned his ..astorate' at
Ardmore and will remove to Shawnee with his wife and boys the first
of the- year. In letters to local Baptists he shows a buoyant hope and
faith in the future of the university that should encourage the members
of the denomination to greater endeavor.
Of Mr Masters and his appointment the Daily Ardmoreite says:
"The unanimous election of Dr. F. M. Masters, pastor of the Broad-
way Baptist church of Ardmore, to the presidency of the Oklahoma Bap-
tist University, demonstrates that he is the biggest Baptist In Oklahoma.
His election is a well deserved honor. His acceptance will mean the
succobs of the Baptist university. It is a deserving honor for the reason
that Dr. Masters Is one of the most untiring workers in the state, and
coupled with his energy is ability to organize and a power to execute
and to lead. It means the success of the university for the reason that
it will have at Its head a man of wonderful resources, a man who will
arouse every Baptist church in the state to a full sense of the responsi-
bility of the university, and who will inspire the Baptists with a zeal for
progress In Christian education that will not be content to stop until
success In (is fullest measure has been realized.
"The Oklahoma Baptist university must compete with the State uni-
verslty, with the preparatory schools, and with the A. & M. < ol ege,
which are supported by the state. In order to compete with the state
institutions he must engage the best teachers, and they must be paid.
He also must have college equipment In order to attract students.
"Dr. Masters is a man who plans well. When he has thought out a
subject, there is little else to be added. When his plans are made ho
marshals his forces and never quits until he wins. He is a young nun,
and physically able to stand up under the enormous amount of work
that must be done.
"His chief work will he as teacher of the Bible, but the Baptists, as
a denomination, will look to him to make the institution a financial suc-
cess. We know the man, we know what he has done here; we know the
power of his ability to organize and execute, and we believe the Baptists
of the state have chosen the right man. We believe his salary will he
doubled after his first yoar's work. We believe, as a result of the action
of the board In electing him, that it has In one day, made the master
stroke that means a great Baptist university for the state.
"While this town can ill afford to give lilni up. yet we must not allow
our selfishness to Btand in the way of advancement of Christian educa-
