The Aunual Meeting of the Christian
Church,
The First Christian church of Nor-
man held its Annual meeting on the
afternoon of January 1st 1903 He-
ports of the past year's work were
read, and plans were discussed and
adopted for. the work of the ensuing
year.
During the past year the church
enjoyed a steady and health} giowth
without any special revival service.
The reports of the Juniors work and
of the Ladies Aid Society were
especially gratifying. A faithful
band of children is being led and in-
structed by an elTcient leader in the
person of Mrs. Creason. A number
of the Juniors have come with the
church during the past year.
During the past year the Ladies
Aid Society increased its member-
ship from 17 to 33. They have erect-
ed a splendid parsonage near tlje
church. They paid $70 on the par-
sonage debt last July and now have
$180 in the treasnry.
On Sunday morning Jan 4th S. J
Bridgewater was elected Elder of
the church and Messrs J. P. Monroe.
Fred Lacy and E. M. Maphis were
elected deacons E. M. Vanderslice
will superintend the Sunday school
during the coming year and Miss
Mary Monroe lias been chosen presi-
dent of the C. E. There are some
obstacles to overcome but church
enters upon the work of the new
year with courage and hope.

Last Tuesday morning H. T. Miller
and his democrtic braves left Nor-
man for Oklahoma City to attend the
so-called non-partisian Statehood
convention. Every one here knows
full well that Henry Miller would
have nothing to do with a statehood
convention that was not of the non-
partisan (?) stripe. As a matter of
fact the democrats in Cleveland
county are patriots first, partisans
afterward (nit).. The reason they
give for being against the passage of
the "Omnibus Statehood Bill" when
they are sifted down to the bottom is
a fear that the new state might elect
republican state officials and send
republicans to congress instead of
democrats. They seem to forget that
the people of the new state have the
power to say who will serve in the
legislative, state, and Federal offices.
If they entertain the idea that this
power has been delegated by the
people to the politicians they are like-
ly to awake and find themselves very
much mistaken. In the organization
of the new state it is our opinion that
men and measures rather than par-
tisan bias is going to cut the wider
swath in determining who will serve
the state in the elective offices. The
Oklahoma voter is quite an intelli-
gent fellow and as a consequenee a
progressive individual. He is not
easily dazzled by a parade headed
with a brass band. He is also quite
deaf to partisan appeals and more
difficult to round up to vote a parti-
san ticket than a wild herd of bron-
chos. He prizes too highly his rights
and privileges as an American citi-
zen to surrender them to the will of
of a few spindle shanked politicians
who are incapable of entertaining a
statesmanship idea above that of a
rnolusk, or are incapacitated, by rea-
of their desire for office, in so doing.

It will be yood news to the mothers
of small children to learn that croup
can be prevented. The tirst slim of
croup is hoarseness, A day or two be-
fore the attack the child becomes
hoarse. Tnls is soon followed by a
peculiar rough cough. Give Cham-
berlains Cough Remedy freely as soon
as the child becomes hoarse, or even
after the rough cough appears, and
it will dispel all symptoms of croup.
In this way all danger and anxiety
may be avoided. This remedy is used
by many thousands of mothers and
has never been known to fail. It is,
in fact, the only remedy that can
always be depended upon and that is
pleasant and safe to tstke. tor sale by
Fred Reed.

A. A. Berry will have have charge
of the jail and M. J. Stow will assist
in the work in Norman. Later he
may appoint some additional depu-
ties in the Northwest Northeast and
Eastern parts of the county should
he deem the same advisable.
As a matter of fact the appoint-
ments are not satisfactory to every
one and Mr. Barker is receiving
some criticism. This is something
he could not hope to escape no mat-
ter who he had named as his deput-
ies. Most of the appointments are
new men in the work and how they
will succeed remains to be learned.
We believe if any of the appoint-
ments made should not prove satis-
factory deputies Mr. Barker will
have no hesitancy in calling for
their resignation, in fact we under-
stand that he made this very point
clear to men before he appointed
them informing them before they
accepted the appointment that in
case they proved not to be such de-
puties as he hoped they would make
that he would have no hesitancy in
calling for their resignations and
that they would be expected to hand
in the same as cheerfully as they
accepted the appointments.
