We have observed with regret
the growing agitation in favor of
jvhat is called bimetallism, the
more so since the theory has ob-
tained the support of persons of
eminence and authority. So long
as it was proposed to apply the
principle in foreign countries only,
we did not feel concerned to offer
an opinion thereon, but wo are
now constrained to state that we
would view with grave apprehen-
sion any change in the system of
currency that has prevailed in this
country since 1816. The experi-
ence of nearly 80 years has convin-
ced uh that this system is in every
respect suited to our wants, and
and that under it the commercial
supremacy of Great Britain and the
financial ascendancy of London
have been established and main-
tained."

The purposes of the gold mono-
metal lists are no longer concealed.
By a series of legislative measures
and by a betrayal of solemn pledges
made to the people by those en-
trusted with the administration of
the government, silver has been
demonetized, and all values reduc-
ed to the single gold standard.
The result is apparent. Busi
ness is everywhere paralyzed. Uni-
versal distress prevails. Millions
of our neople are out of employ-
ment who are able and willing to
work. The value of all property
has been depreciated nearly one-
halt, while the purchasing power
of money has increased in equal
proportion.
The debtor class—the farmers
and the mechanics and the produc-
ers of the nation—are at the mercy
of the remorseless Shylocks who
control the gold of the world, and
who now propose to make the sin-
gle gold standard the permanent
financial policy of the United
States. In the opinion of the un-
dersigned the time has come to ro-
sist this unjust demand. We be-
lieve that the free and unlimited
coinage of silver at the ratio of 16
to 1, and its maintenance in com-
mon with gold as a money of ulti-
mate redemption, would do much
to relieve the present distress, and
inaugurate a new era of prosperty.
We therefore invite the lriends
of the free coinage of silver in the
different counties of Oklahoma,
without distinction of party to as-
semble in mass convention at Ok-
lahoma City, on June 25. 1895,
at 3 o'clock p. m. for the pur-
pose of organizing a Territorial
Free Silver League and to take
such action as may be necessary
to co-operate with similar organi-
zation in other sections of the
country.
Hon. 'V. J. Bryan, of Lincoln,
Neb., has accepted an invitation to
address the convention.
Senator Henry M. Teller, of Col-
orado, and Senator William M.
Stewart, of Nevada, have been invi-
ted and are expected to be present
and make addresses.

arrangements will save Oklahoma,
thousands of dol lars the '1 imes Jour-
nals kick is not of much force. In
connection with this it should be
remembered that the terms of the
contract was made public before
the legislature adjourned and that
body left the matter in the hands
of the Governor. The Times Jour-
nal is also wrong when it says that
it is not expected that the Sanita-
rium Company, can give as good
service as were furnished at Jack-
sonville. If all reports are true as
to the condition and kind of build-
ings at Jacksonville, the Sanitari-
um will be far superior and the ser-
vice will be better in every way.
The Sanitarium building will be
modern in character with a good
location, plenty of water and all
the necessary sanitary convenien-
ces and under the direction of ex-
perienced managers. It is at the
same price contracted for by Gov-
ernor's Steele and Seay, the money
paid for the keeping all stays in
Oklahoma, and thousands of dol-
lars will be saved the territory in
Sheriffs fees and mileage, so it
seems to us that there is no cause
to complain.
"To illustrate the infinite number
ami intricacy of wheels vithin
wheels of political machinery."
said. Senator Blackburn to a cor-
respondent of the Cincinnati
Enquirer. "Iwill tell you a little
trick I played on a number of my
senatorial colleagues. Morton Fru-
in, an Englishman who married a
sister of Lady Somerset, and who
is one of the most intelligent and
forceful advocates of bimetallism
was in Washington. The fur-
ious currency war was just then at
its height. England had closed the
mints of India to the silver, and the
gold monometallists were using
this a an argument for the uncon-
ditional repeal of the Sherman law.
Mr. Fru in suggested that I get up a
petition and circulate is quietly
among members of the senate for
signatures for the increase ol our
tar iff on diamonds. l'I was to give
him this petition after securing all
the signatures possible, and he was
to go back to England with it post
haste. I did as he requested and se-
cured the sigatures of forty odd se-
nators, my friends Gorman and
Brice among the number. The pe.
tition looked innocent enough, but
John Sherman, with the wisdom
of the serpent, refused to sign it.
"Not long after Fruin had returned
to London a marked change was ob-
servable in the tone of the English
press toward silver. Even the Lon-
don Times emitted a low rumble of
thunder for the recognition of sil
ver. Gorman commenced to smell
a mouse, and at once hunted me up
and asked what object I had in
getting signatures to that petition
for an increase of our tariff on dia-
monds, and then giving the petit-
ion to Fruin to be carried to Lon-
don. "Then I gave the whole snap
j away to him, which was this:
. Fruin had told me of toe relations
! by marriage of the English pre-
! mier, Lord Kosebery, to the Ilotlis-
jchilds, and that the Hothschilds
vere very largely interested in the
| diamond fields of South Africa, lie
went on to explain that since this
country led the world in the pur-
chase of diamonds, if we seriously
