Following the depressing news of
the serious illness of Kaiser William
comes report of a sweeping naval vic-
tory by the British squadron in South
Atlantic waters, off Falkland islands,
wherein the German cruisers Scharn-
horst, Sneisenan and Leipsig were
destroyed, 2,000 sailors and marines
going down with their vessels. The
three German vessels hove been play-
ing havoc with English shipping, and
Vice Admiral Sturdee was sent
against them with orders to wipe
them off the face of the sea. He
seems to have performed the task
quite efficiently.
quite efficiently. Two other German
cruisers are being pursued. Two col-
liers filled with coal were also taken
in by the English.
Latest news from Berlin is that
Kaiser William's condition is really
serious, and physicians have ordered
the utmost quiet for him. His death
or serious sickness might have a great
effect on the war, although the Ger-
man war office says not; that every
contingency of that sort has been pro-
vided for.
The news of their naval victory has
put new life, seemingly, into the Al-
lies, and their offensive operations in
Flanders are said to be very aggres-
sive. It is believed there will be some-
thing doing of great import along all
lines within the next few days.
BOOTLEGGERS TAKEN IX jjj
Night Marshal Ed Mays arrested 4*
A. J. Wiggins Wednesday night and
captured a gallon of booze. Also Lee
Walker, charged with transporting.
It is said Wiggins used Walker as a
catspaw, Walker ordering the whis-
ky in his own name and turning it
over to Wiggins. Wiggins is in the
county jail. Walker is out on band.
Good work.
