OCEAN SHIPS TO MEMPHIS.
A Texas Company Will Start Smicp
in 1910
St. Ix>uis, Sept. 3.—Steamer service
between New York and Memphis, with
an early extension to St. Louis, will
be established early next year accord-
ing to William Jervis, traffic manager
of a Texas company with offices in St.
Ixjuis. Mr. Jervis said today that he
understood that five light draft boats
now being constructed will be oper-
ated between the two ports by a com
jiany which now runs vessels between
Texas City and New York.
The new service is a part of a gen-
eral scheme which has been taking
root here for the establishment of an
all water route between the Central
West and the Atlantic seaboard by
way of the Mississippi river, the Gulf
of Mexico and the Atlantic ocean. It
is said that the all water route will
carry first-class freight at a quarter
of the cost of the present all-rail
route.
The boats that are to go into com-
mission when navigation opens in
1910 are to run without stop between
Memphis and New 'York. New Or-
leans, according to present plans, is
to be served by a connecting line at
Texas City and freight for points
north of Memphis will be trans-
shipped there probably through a
traffic agreement with existing lines.
If the project proves a success the
days of the old-time Mississippi river
type of steamboat will be numbered.
The new craft are to be of a design
resembling, in hull tines, the whale-
back barges of the Great Lakes. Their
upper works, however, will give them
more the appearance of ocean going
vessels.
WELSTOBT WANT SCHOOL SITE.
Wellston today entered the race for
the location of the Third District Agri-
cultural School, making the fourth
Lincoln county town to try for the
school. J. H. Rhine, F. B. Weathers
and George F. Clark were a Wellston
committee here today to present the
claims of their town. They offer to
duplicate the propositions made by
any of the other towns and cite the
great amount of indemnity school
lands that are to be sold soon as an
additional argument. They claim the
increased prices the state will obtain
from these lands will more than pay
for the school.

Oklahoma Labor Department to Make
Recommendation*.
Whether the proposed revision of the
interstate commerce commission's
rules will or will not prevent the
transportation of convict-made goods
into a state where the laws prohibit
convict labor from being placed in
competition with free labor, Oklahoma
will probably have legislation on the
subject, if recommendations of the
state labor department are to be fol-
lowed.
Governor Haskell has forwarded to
President Taft petitions from thirty-
three Oklahoma labor unions request-
ing that in changing the interstate
commerce commission's rules such
outlawed competition be made impos-
sible. The governor's letter accom-
panying the petition suggests that it
would not be necessary to legislate
upon upon the subject; however, if it
was, he urges the president to submit
the matter to congress. The gover-
nor's letter in part says:
"We fed that it is equivalent to in-
flictir? punishment upon the innocent,
when labor and skill of the guilty is
brought into competition with the in-
nocent at the usual nominal contract a graduate of the 1 Diversity ol < hica
rpice of prison labor." . I so. who was recently appointed profes-
Snyder, Ok.—For a long time it lias
been known that the Wichita Moun
tains yielded to the searchers ame-
thysts, agates and other valuable
stones, as also some very line near-
diamond specimens, but it is only re-
cently that it has been discovered that
Ottor Creek is a producer of pearls.
Mrs. John brady of near Snyder has
for some time been finding small pearls
in the Otter Creek muscles, or fresh
water clams, which in brilliancy rival
the very best on the market, and re-
cently found one which, except for an
invisible flaw, which reduced its com-
mercial value, she could have sold for
$;10. The brilliancy of polish and deli-
cacy of coloring of this made it a most
beautiful pearl, which, in spite of the
flaw, caused a local jeweler to pay
$6.50 for it. From what Mrs. Brady
says of the number of pearls, Otter
Creek must conceal hundreds
thousands of wealth which some en-
thusiastic pearl fisher may some day
bring to light.

"The fact that the government has
an Indiana agency within the incorpor-

significant one in connection with the
volume of business," says Ed Gray,
editor of the Pawnee Times-Democrat.
"From this agency annual more than

of it becomes ultimately an addition to
Pawnee's surplus.
"it is estimated that the average
trade f the Pawnees in the stores in
