The Way Enid Grows
Prominent Citizen Tells El Reno People
What We Have Here-
El Reno, Okla., Feb. 14.-Juage
Henry Sturgis, of Enid, was a visitor
in he city yesterday. Sp aking of
his houe town he said: "Enio is. not
scheming for a boom we do not need
one, our town is Ailing up rapidly with
hundreds of progressive citizens and
1 can safely say for its age it is tne
largest aim best city in Oklahoma.
"There Is 110 better farming :ountrj
in any state or territory than that
from which Enid draws her support.
Garfield county soil wi 1 raise auj-
thing in the shape of cereals, fruit
or in fact anything that can be grown
within the confines of the Unit d
States.
"Our people are progressive and
law abiding. Our schools are the verj
best. Our churches cannot be im
proved upon. Our railroad facilities
are beyond compare. We are sure of
another railroad, also a federal build
Ing. A new opera bouse that will cost
at least $30,000 is contemplated. A
street railway Is coming to us in the
spring along with other enterprises
not yet given to tbe public.
Mark Twain on Truth.
Despite the fact that he humorously
pretended to be the premier Uaron
Munchausen of the age, Mai k Twain
declared at a uickens anniversary
limrer at'.he Press club last week
that John 1). Rockefeller, Jr , could
each blm nothing in the veracity
line.
Tbe statement grew out of the tact,
0 Mr. Clemens said, that he bad been
tiooded with letters calling attention
to bis 'lamentable' disregard of eola
facts, and suggesting he read \oung
Rockefeller s sermon on veracity to
his Bible class.
"My unknown correspondent sug-
gested that it would not be a bad idea
ii 1 should attend the next session
and learn something about the truth,"
the genial humorist taid with a broad
smile.
"Now I know young Mr. Rockefeller
a id 1 appreciate the fact that he is
fully competent tc teach a Sunday
school. He is a good fellow, but when
it imes to veracity, well, he is only
35 years old and 1 am 70. That makes
cue twice as well acquainted with
truth as he is."
Mr. Clemens launched into a convul-
sing talk on ihe great wtang people
do by preaching against "the art of
telling lies," and he woutid up by de-
caring that the entire world has en-
tirely missed the real point in the
story of George Washington and the
cherry tree.
" l'he reason his father was proud ot
him," Mark Twain said, "is not that
he told the truth, but because he knew
enough not to tell a lie when a lie
would have been immediately detect-
ed." The maivelous celerity with
which young George took in the situ-
ation and saved the dav was what,
Mr. Clemens said, made the elder
Washington proud.
APOSTROPHE 10 THE HOG.
Prom the Moro(La.) Observer.
You will never know the trouble
nd pleasure of life until you raise
nogs. They are a bother and a vex
ation to the spirit cf man while they
live, but bring joy and contentment
to the soul of man when they die at
hog-killing time. The Americanhog,
however, is the dad blatnedest, split-
hoofed, long-snouted busybody animal
we ever saw. He can make a fellow
madder than other animals that in-
test the premises, He will always
squeal and muddy your pants when ne
anows you are trying to feed him.
He will get In your garden through a
knothole and destroy enough produce
in three minutes to feed your wife
and children for three months. He
will pay no attention to a wide open
gate where you want him to go
through, but will shovel out several
cubic yards of dirt to make a hole in-
to a place you don't want him to go.
He Is the biggest nuisance and most
profitable on the farm.
