Arizona Cattle.
Stroud Okla. June 18.—Stephens
Brothers, who conduct a cattle ranch
in Arizona shipped 325 head of young
cattle from there to Stroud a few
days ago. The cattle are now graz-
ing in the old Stephens pasture, a few
miles north of town. The Stephens
boys say that it hadn't rained in Ari-
zona for the last ten months and
that prickly pears even are wilting.
It cost them a little over a dollar
a head to have the stock brought
here. Eastern Lincoln counly is
justly famous for its abundantly wat-
ered, nicely shaded pastures, and
ticks are seldom in evidence.
CAN'T RESIGN.
Kingfisher, June 20.—Postmaster
Hendrix of Columbia, a small town in
Kingfisher county, has a difficult time
in resigning his position. He was ap-
pointed by President Harrison when
the territory first opened in 1889, and
has held office ever since, not because
he desired it, but simply because no-
body else will take the place. He has
plead with the government officials,
had prominent relatives intercede
for him and used evety resource to be
removed from office or be allowed to
resign, but all to nolavail. He is a
cousin of Congressman Hendrix of
New York (the Brooklyn district) and
also of Bishop Hendrix of the M. E.
church, South, and both of these rela-
tives have used their influence to se-
cure the Oklahoma cousin s freedom
from his official duties. The postmas-
ter is the only republican of the
family. He believes that he must
either suicide or embezzle the postal
funds in order to be released.
6.000 Miles From a Jury.
"No freeman,' promised King John
under the persuasion of the barons
at Ilunnymede, shall be taken, or im-
prisoned, or disseized, or outlawed, or
exiled, or in any way harmed—nor
will we go upon or send upon hiui—
save by the lawful judgment of his
peers or by the law of the land."
For nearly seven hundred years
that has been the law of English-
speaking men. But the supreme
court of the United States, by its
favorite vote of five to four, has de-
cided that not only the constitution,
but Magna Charta stops this side of
the Philippines. American citizens
living in that favored land are not
to enjoy the right of trial by jury be-
cause congress was under an obliga-
tion to extend that right to a people
unfit to exercise it.
Of conrse the law is what the ma-
jority of the supreme court declares
it to be. But there Is no disrespect
to that lofty tribunal in saying that
if our Hag is floating over seven mil-
lion people who are unfit to be trust-
ed with trial by jury it is wandering
altogether too far from home.—New
York World.
