CRIMINAL ASSAULT.
C. W- Barrett, a Douglas Drii sr^ist,
Barely Escapes Unching by an
Indignant People.;
(,'. W. Barrett, a druggist at Doug-
las, this county, is in the county jail
in this city on a charge of criminal-
ly assaulting Mrs. .). L. Trower of
that, city Friday evening. The as
sault is alleged to have been commit-
ted so cowardly and brutally as to
subject Barrett to public indignation,
and in order to save his life frcm the
wrath of the outraged woman's friends
it became necessary to secretly hie
him away to a point between Douglas
andthisclty wherehewas met and
taken into custody by Sheriff James
Kershaw, Saturday evening.
Barrett is a man about 30 years of
age, married, and of more than the
averaje size. His victim is a deli-
cate little lady, weighing perhaps !t0
pounds Her husband was out of the
city, as was also Barrett's wife. She
states 'that she entered the drug
store to procure a medical prepar-
ation, when Barrett seized and out-
raged her by force.
The woman's husband being out of
the city *he told some friends of what
had happened and steps were taken
on Saturday to prosecute Barrett.
He was arrested by the local oliicers
and held until his personal safety
seemed insecure, when he was hasten-
ed out of town.

A Bad Year Ahead.
Perilous titnes will prevail during
the year 1!)04, says an Ohio weather
prophet named Marsh. It will be oni-
of the worst years on record for dis
asters, crimes, earthquakes, wars,
contlagations and floods, with many
failures in business and panics. The
year will be marked by the most vio-
lent storms and heaviest snow and
rain for one year on record. Floods
of great magnitude will prevail,
causing destruction of property and
loss of life.
