livery business, and the first
thing he did was to have a sign
painted representing himself
holding a mule by the bridle.
He was particularly proud of
this stroke of business enterprise
and asked of his wife: "Is that
not a good likeness of nie^"

Jefferson Rapples, once a
wealthy New York banker and
business associate of Jay Gould,
Commodore Vanderbilt and
John R. Blair, is now an inmate
of a New York poorhouse.
The population of Pauls Val-
ley is rapidly in creasing. The
demand for business houses and
residence houses was never

Bonds Sold.
The city council met last Saturday
and the $25,000.00 school bonds were
sold for $26,261.25. We learn that
they were bought by Oklahoma City
capitalists.
This amount of money will be used
in the erection of two up-to-date school
buildings, and the contract for the
work is to be let at once.
B. J. Clardy, one of our popular real
estate men went to Shawnee Tuesday
on business.
The United States Marshal accom-
panied several vagrant negores to Pur-
cell Monday.
T. D, Wagner and family of Lindsay
were the guests of friends here last
week.

Mrs. J. W. Wollard, and daughter

a visit to relatives. Mrs. Wollard it. a

We are relibily informed that J. T.
Jones has bought the old Opera house
! from parties in Texas. It is olso inti-
mated there is a probability of parties
building a new up-to-date play-house
; in our city.
Curtis Sharp of Paradise Texas, was
in the city on busiuess yesterday.
St. Mary's Guild of the Episcopal
church will meet next Wednesday ev-
ening at 4 o'clock with Mrs. W. T.
Hightower.
Mr. Lawson, father of Sid Lawson of
this place, has arrived in the city from
: Austin, Texas, and will locate here.
He is a very extensive famer and we
are glad to have him locate with us.
Judge R. McMillan came home
Wednesday afternoon from Oklahoma
City and Purcell on a business trip.
Dr. F. L. Winkler of Kingfisher,
Okla., is in the city this week figuring
on making very valuable investments
in our city. Dr. Winkler is a capital-
ist of large means and would be a
strong man for Pauls Valley to have
and we hope that he may see fit to
cast his lot with us. He is one of the
finest physicians in Oklahoma, is a
' member of the legislature and is a
very brilliant gentleman. He is also
a close friend of Banker Vaughn and
our jolly Gents, furnishing goods man,
E. L. Kendall.
