PLACE.—Capernaum, near the Sea of

Suggestion and Practical Thought.
The Occasion of Peter's Question.—
Matt. 18; 1-20. After the return from
the Transfiguration scene, when Jesus
with his disciples were together In a
house In Capernaum. Jesus gave them
some practical teaching and training
on how they should feel and act In a
time of growing opposition from un-
godly men among whom they must
live and work.
First of all they must cease ambi-
tious striving for place and honor.
They must "fling away ambition, by
that sin fell the angels." This self-
seeking spirit was exactly opposite to
the kingdom of heaven, nnd If they
did not overcome It, their lives would
be failures. It also tended to awaken
hard feelings between brethren. Cut
off your foot; p'uck out your eye. If
you must, but hold on to the spirit of
the kingdom.
The second lesson was from their
Heavenly Father's seeking not to de-
stroy those who hate and revile and
disobey him, but to give himself to

The third lesson was upon the way
they should carry out this divine spirit
toward those who sinned against
them.
Peter's Question and Jesus' Answer,
Concerning the Duty of Forgiving En-
emies.—Vs. 21, 22. "The Kabbis, who
had been the disciples' teachers hith-
erto, required an offenier to go to
the Injured party and obtain forgive-
ness by owning his fault; but Jesus
told them that among his disciples
the person wronged was to go to the
wrongdoer, that such humility and
love might strengthen his own graces,
and win the guilty one to contrition."
—Maclaren.
T^ils was a hard saying, but by
united prayer this spirit, as well as
every olher blessing, could be ob-
tained But wrongs to others, real or
fancied, are very common, and Peter
naturally asks how long one must
carry out this Instruction toward those
who keep on sinning and apparently
repenting.
Jesus Illustrates His Teaching by a
Parable.—Vs. 23-34. Contrasting the
debt sinful man owes to God with
what any man wronging his fellow
man owes to the one he has Injured.
If therefore God forgives freely the
great debt, forgiven man certainly
should forgive the little debt.
The Two Methods of Treating the
Debtors. 25. "Commanded him to be
sold . . . and all that he had."
Bo In Syria now, when the debt grows
till It eouals In value the entire prop-
erty of the debtors, the creditor seizes
all they possess.
"The same servant went out." From
his king's presence. He acted In the
very heat of his own experience of re-
lease. "And found one of his fellow-
servants." An Inferior officer. "Owed
him an hundred pence." When the
common translation of the Bible was
made the pennies were all silver, cop-
per pennies not being coined till 1707.
"Took him by the throat." Literally,
went to choking him. "Thus l.lvy
(IV., 63) relates how, a difficulty hav-
Irg arisen between the consul
Valerius and one Menenlus, the
tribunes put an end to the contest,
and the consul ordered Into prison
(collum torsisset, twisted the neck)
the few who appealed. And Cicero
(Pro Cluentio, XXI ): 'Lead him to
the Judgment-seat with twisted neck
(collo obtorto).' Compare Cicero in
C. Verrem, IV., 10."—Vincent.
j "Fell down at his feet, ... I
will pay thee all." The very act and
words he himself had so lately em-
ployed to his creditor.
! "And he would not: but went"
(went away) "and cast him into
prison."
He had reasons In his own mind,
as (1) that the man deserved the pun-
ishment; (2) It was his own fault
that he was In debt; (3) It was not
good for the community that such
men go unpunished. But not one of
these dl I he want applied to himself.
The Lesson In Daily Life.—V. 35. 1.
The Punishment of Those Who Refuse
to Forgive Those Who Injure Them.
"So likewise shall my heavenly Father
do also unto you." The torments must
follow to you "If ye .from your hearts,"
really and not merely In words, "for
give not every one his brother their
trespasses." Every such person Is go-
ing In the straight road to the tor
mentors.
There Is no greater torment than
those conscience and the working out
of the laws of nature and of ^ilrlt
produce In order t make the way ol
transgressors so hard that they may
be persuaded to turn, and repent and
obey and be Baved.
SENTENCE SERMONS.

and highest achievement."—Bushnell.
"Be ye therefore Imitators of God,
as beloved children." An unforgiving
Christian is, therefore, a moral mon-
ster.

return evil for good ls> devilish; to re-
turn good for good Is human; but t«

"In Dowlals, South Wales, about fif-
teen years ago, families were strick-

terrible disease of Its kind that I

body and makes your life an Inferno.
Sleep Is out of the question and you
teel as if a million mosquitoes were

knew a dozfen families that were so
iffected.
'The doctors did their best, but
their remedies were of no avail what-
ever. Then the families tried a drug-
gist who was noted far and wide for
bis remarkable cures. People came
to him from all parts of the country
for treatment, but his medicine made
matters still worse, as a last resort
they were advised by u friend to use
the Cutlcura Remedies. I am glad to

An Easy Fit.
A number of years ago there lived
in northern New Hampshire a notorl-
jus woman-hater. It was before the
lay of ready-made clothing, and want-
ing a new suit, he was obliged to take
'.he material to the village tailoresa.
She took his measurements, and when
ihe cut the coat, made a liberal al-
lowance on each seam.
The man's dislike of women In gen-
eral prevented his having a fitting.
Me took the finished garment without
trying It on. It was much too large,
ind his disgust was apparent In the
inswer he made to the friendly loafer
jn his first visit to the post office,
when he wore the despised article.
"Got a new coat, Obed?" said the
loafer.

Women's Secrets
There is one man in the United States who has perhaps heard
more women's secrets than any other tnan or woman in the
country. These secrots are not secrets of guilt or shame, but
the secrets of suffering, and they have been confided to Dr. •
R. V. Pierce in the hope and expectation of advice and help.
That few of these women have been disappointed in their ex-
pectation is proved by the fact that ninety-eight per cent, of
ell women treated by Dr. Pierce have been absolutely and
altogether cured. Such a record would bo remarkable if tho
cases treated were numbered by hundreds only. But when
that record applies to the treatment of more than hali-a- mil-
lion women, in a practice of over 40 years, it is phenomenal,
•nd entitles Dr. Pierce to the gratitude accorded him by women, ss the 6r t ol
specialists in the treatment of women's diseases.
Every sick woman may consult Dr. Pierce by letter, absolutely without
charge. All replies are mailed, sealed in perfectly plain envelopes, without
any printing or advertising whatever, upon them. Write without (ear as with-
