He got pushed out, went to Norman to replace automobile chains he had broken. No chains available. miller parked his car, waited for the train, which was 50 minutes late. Miller's comment: "There were a lot of fellows willing to freeze to help others."

Eldon Tinsley, acting district fire chief, estimated danage at $75,000. About 15 automobiles in the shop for paint and body repairs were damaged. The blaze, shooting through roof skylights when firemen arrived shortly after 2:20 a.m., was confined to the shop building. About 20 residents of upstairs apartments in a building to the east were evacuated, but firemen kept the blaze from spreading. The roof and a portion of one wall collapsed but none of the firemen from 12 units answering the two alarms were injured."

State Highway Department statistics show that what used to be safer-than-normal stretch of interstate highway north of Purcell has had three times its usual number of accidents since improvements began. Drivers are warned a mile in advance at both end of the highway project but warnings apparently aren't enough. The segment of I-35 is recieving an asphaltic concrete overlay so it will meet current federal interstate highway standards. Many portions of Oklahoma's interstate highway system which were built before 1965 are too light to handle 1971's heavier traffic. Work crews began strengthening this part of I-35 in January, two weeks after a new length of I-35 north of Purcell, the local accident rate has jumped to 107.2 per 100 million vehivle miles to travel. One year ago the same stretch of freeway carried the same amount of traffic in worse weather with an accident rate of 40.2 per 100 million vehicle miles of travel. The annual accident rate for all Oklahoma limited access highways is 52.2 per 100 million vehicle miles.
