Marking the Butterfield: Retracing the Indian Territory Segment of the 1858-61 Butterfield Overland Mail Stagecoach Road

Description: In 2018 the National Park Service recommended that the Butterfield Overland Mail Stagecoach Road be designated a National Historic Trail. Sixty years earlier, OHS staff marked this important trade and transit route with historical markers. This article retraces the road, describing the landmarks as they appeared on the 1958 trek as well as their present conditions.

Being used as soil builder on Soil Bank Land. James was not ready to go to pasture and land was still suitable for cultivation as mapped by SCS Soils technicians. After a period of years this land will be returned to production of grain and fiber crops or maintained as Sericea meadow for Hickman's cow herd."

Unfinished Choctaw Justice: The Murder of Charles Wilson and the Execution of Jackson Crow

Description: Article relates the events surrounding the arrest, trial, and acquittal of Charles Wilson's political rival, Robert Benton, in Choctaw court after Wilson was murdered in August 1884. Jackson Crow, a non-Choctaw also accused of the crime, was convicted in federal court and executed in 1888.

Plans were being made to reestablish a mission in Poteau previous to 1959 but was not officially organized until 1959. There had been a mission in Poteau in 1914 but it was closed and sold during the Depression.

Grass, Legume and Forb Cultivation

Description: Photograph of Lee R. Carlton, work Unit Conservationist [WUC], Talihina, examining a field of lovegrass (erogratis curvula) and Sericea lespedeza. The mixture was planted on April 19, 1955 and fertilized with 100 pounds of 10-20-10 and 200 pounds of 0-20-0 fertilizers. Mowed on June 10, 1955 at 15 bales per acre. Potato Hill, 6 d, drouthy soil. This is an introductory planting of weeping lovegrass in this area. It looks promising. OK-72-10.
